ASSISTANT SALES MANAGER – HOME FURNISHINGS

Location: Champaign IL
Job Type: Full-Time

Compensation: $18/hr with commission ($50-75k /year estimated total)

 

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for an experienced sales or retail professional who is ready to take the next step into leadership.

As an Assistant Sales Manager, you’ll work alongside the Sales Manager to lead the sales team, coach and develop Sales Professionals, help drive store performance, and make sure customers have a great experience from the moment they walk through the door.

This is a hands-on leadership position. You won’t be sitting in an office all day—you’ll be on the sales floor working with customers, helping your team close business, solving customer issues, and stepping in wherever you’re needed to keep the store running smoothly.

 

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Coach, mentor, and develop sales team members to improve individual and store performance.

  • Work alongside the Sales Manager to achieve monthly sales and profitability goals.

  • Stay active on the sales floor and help ensure customers are receiving excellent service.

  • Assist with training, role-playing, product knowledge, and sales development.

  • Help manage sales schedules, team performance, and day-to-day sales activity.

  • Step in to assist with customer overflow and close sales when needed.

  • Work with underperforming team members on development and improvement plans.

  • Help resolve customer concerns, order issues, and other problems that come up during the sales process.

  • Conduct sales meetings and provide feedback to the Sales Manager on team performance.

  • Help maintain showroom standards, product presentation, and overall store appearance.

  • Monitor sales activity and performance information to identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Assist with recruiting and developing new Sales Professionals.

  • Maintain relationships with current and prospective customers through follow-up.

  • Serve as Manager on Duty when needed, including handling customer issues and coordinating with other departments.

  • Serve as a key holder and assist with opening and closing the store.

  • Assist with other store operations and projects as needed.

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • Previous retail management or similar experience.

  • Supervisory or team leadership experience preferred.

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.

  • Ability to coach, motivate, and hold a team accountable.

  • Strong organization and time-management skills.

  • Comfortable multitasking and working in a fast-paced retail environment.

  • Good judgment and problem-solving skills.

  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office and other computer systems.

  • Furniture/home furnishings experience and knowledge of sales techniques is preferred, but not required.

SCHEDULE

This is a full-time retail leadership position. The schedule includes evenings, weekends, and holidays, with additional hours possible during major sales events, holidays, and other periods of increased business. Occasional travel to other locations for training or meetings may also be required.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is an active retail position requiring extended periods of standing and walking, along with occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and lifting or moving items up to 25 lbs. The position works primarily in a retail, office, and warehouse environment.
