Job Title: Accounting Supervisor 

Reports To: Controller / Director of Accounting and Finance Position 

 

Summary 

The Accounting Supervisor oversees core accounting functions, with primary responsibility for commission accounting and reconciliations, while supporting month-end close and daily accounting operations. This hands-on role requires an adaptable mindset, strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to lead staff, improve processes, and operate effectively in a high volume, lean environment. The position offers opportunities to assume broader responsibilities over time. 

 

Key Responsibilities 

Commission Revenue Accounting 

• Oversee accurate accrual, invoicing, reconciliation, collection, and application of commission revenue

• Prepare and review reconciliations of vendor statements, deductions, chargebacks, and internal commission records 

• Investigate and resolve commission discrepancies, including deductions, chargebacks, and trade promotion activity 

• Partner with sales and operations to resolve discrepancies and maintain accurate commission records and payments 

• Communicate with vendors to resolve payment issues and discrepancies and support timely, accurate commission collections

• Supervise, train, and review the work of staff responsible for commission-related activities 

 

Core Accounting (Close, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable) 

• Support full cycle accounting activities, including journal entries, accruals, estimates, account reconciliations, and month- and year-end close 

• Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies 

• Maintain effective internal controls and complete accounting activities in accordance with established policies and deadlines

 • Prepare and review bank and balance sheet account reconciliations, ensuring timely resolution of outstanding items 

• Help oversee accounts receivable and accounts payable processes, including workflow, accuracy, and issue resolution 

• Monitor collections and follow up on outstanding balances 

• Ensure timely payment of vendor invoices and employee expenses, accurate coding, and appropriate supporting documentation 

• Assist with preparing supporting schedules and information for tax, regulatory, and business filings 

• Coordinate with the external CPA firm on tax filings, year-end matters, and requested supporting documentation 

 

Other Duties 

 Assign work, review deliverables, coach staff, and support performance and professional development 

 Document, standardize, and improve accounting processes to increase accuracy, efficiency, and scalability 

 Assist with benefits administration 

 Support budgeting, forecasting, and profitability analysis, as needed 

 Prepare ad hoc reports and analyses and perform other accounting and administrative duties as assigned 

 

Qualifications 

Required 

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent experience, plus at least 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in food brokerage, wholesale, or distribution

 • Strong knowledge of GAAP and hands-on experience with month-end close, journal entries, and account reconciliations 

• Experience supervising, training, and reviewing the work of accounting staA 

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, including pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, basic formulas, and reconciliations 

• Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, or a comparable system 

 

Preferred 

• Experience working in a small, lean business environment 

• Accounting experience in the food brokerage, wholesale, distribution, or a related industry

 • Experience with commission accounting, including deductions, chargebacks, and trade promotion spending 

• CPA license Personal Attributes
