Fire Watch personnel are responsible for monitoring a facility when a required fire protection system is temporarily out of service. The Fire Watch must remain alert, conduct required patrols, identify fire and safety hazards, and immediately report emergencies to the Fire Department.

When required, the facility may need to be evacuated or an approved Fire Watch provided for occupants who are unprotected due to the shutdown of a fire protection system.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Conduct periodic patrols of the entire facility as specified.

  2. Identify fire, life-safety, and property hazards.

  3. Call 911 immediately if a fire or emergency is discovered and provide the exact facility address and type of emergency.

  4. Notify occupants when evacuation is necessary. If the fire alarm or public-address system is operational, use it to assist with evacuation.

  5. Maintain at least one reliable method of direct communication with the Fire Department, such as a telephone or radio.

  6. Maintain an accurate log of all Fire Watch activities and patrols.

  7. Know the location and proper use of fire protection equipment, including fire extinguishers.

  8. Fire Watch personnel must remain dedicated to Fire Watch duties and may not perform other duties unless specifically authorized by the Fire Department.

Note: Fire Watch personnel are not expected to perform firefighting duties beyond those normally expected of an ordinary citizen.

Frequency of Inspections

Fire Watch personnel should patrol the entire facility every 15 minutes when:

  • The facility has people sleeping.

  • The facility is an institutional occupancy.

  • The facility is an occupied assembly occupancy.

For facilities that do not meet the above requirements, Fire Watch patrols should be conducted every 30 minutes.

Record Keeping

A Fire Watch log must be maintained at the facility and available throughout the duration of the Fire Watch. The log should include:

  1. Facility address.

  2. Time each patrol was completed.

  3. Name of the person conducting the Fire Watch.

  4. Records of communications with the Fire Department and monitoring company.

  5. Any additional information or instructions provided by Fire Department personnel.

Cancellation of Fire Watch

The property owner or designated representative is responsible for requesting cancellation of the Fire Watch once the fire protection system has been fully restored or the special circumstance or event has ended.

The Fire Watch must not be cancelled until approved by the Fire Code Official.

Once the Fire Watch has been approved for cancellation, the owner or representative must notify the monitoring company and the local Fire Code Official.
