Business Unit Manager Job Summary

A growing manufacturing organization is seeking an experienced Business Unit Manager to provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for an assigned manufacturing area. This role is responsible for driving world-class performance across safety, quality, delivery, cost, and productivity while leading teams through continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives.

The Business Unit Manager will oversee financial and operational performance, develop and execute business strategies, support new product launches, and build a flexible, high-performing team. The ideal candidate combines strong manufacturing knowledge with proven leadership, financial understanding, and disciplined problem-solving skills.

Business Unit Manager Responsibilities

• Lead daily manufacturing operations to achieve safety, quality, cost, delivery, and productivity goals.
• Develop and execute short- and long-term operational strategies aligned with business objectives.
• Manage departmental budgets and control material, labor, and overhead costs.
• Lead lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, and waste-reduction initiatives.
• Coordinate production, procurement, product development, and support resources to meet business and customer needs.
• Balance current production requirements with new product introductions and program launches.
• Lead and develop cross-functional teams, including coaching, mentoring, performance management, and employee development.
• Monitor productivity and operational performance and implement improvements as needed.
• Evaluate and recommend new equipment, processes, systems, and procedures.
• Support quality systems and ensure compliance with applicable ISO/IATF requirements.
• Champion safety initiatives and ensure compliance with company, regulatory, and environmental requirements.
• Conduct workplace inspections and address safety or environmental concerns.
• Support development of quality procedures, work instructions, and operating standards.
• Communicate operational priorities, performance, and business needs to employees and leadership.
• Complete projects and other duties in support of business objectives.

Business Unit Manager Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in manufacturing, engineering, operations, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
• 3–5+ years of manufacturing leadership experience.
• Strong knowledge of manufacturing operations, process design, quality systems, and production processes.
• Experience with Lean Manufacturing and/or Toyota Production System principles.
• Proven ability to lead, coach, mentor, and develop employees at all levels.
• Strong financial, budgeting, and cost-management skills.
• Demonstrated project management and continuous improvement experience.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills with both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Working knowledge of statistical problem-solving techniques.
• Experience with ISO/IATF quality systems preferred.
• Strong commitment to safety, quality, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

This position primarily involves office work with regular interaction on the manufacturing floor. The employee may occasionally stand, walk, reach, bend, or stoop and may need to lift or move up to 25 pounds. The role requires adherence to all applicable manufacturing safety protocols and use of required personal protective equipment.
