Full-Charge Construction Bookkeeper Job Description 

A Full-Charge Construction Bookkeeper is responsible for managing all accounting and bookkeeping functions for a construction company. This position oversees the complete financial cycle, including job costing, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, financial reporting, cash flow management, and compliance with construction industry regulations.

Position Summary

The Full-Charge Construction Bookkeeper maintains accurate financial records for multiple construction projects, ensures timely payments to vendors and subcontractors, monitors project profitability through job costing, and provides management with financial reports to support business decisions.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Bookkeeping

  • Manage the company's general ledger and chart of accounts.
  • Record and reconcile all financial transactions.
  • Perform monthly, quarterly, and year-end closings.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and loan accounts.
  • Prepare financial statements, including:
    • Profit & Loss Statements
    • Balance Sheets
    • Cash Flow Statements

Accounts Payable

  • Process vendor and supplier invoices.
  • Verify subcontractor invoices against contracts and work completed.
  • Manage payment schedules and vendor relationships.
  • Track and maintain lien waivers and subcontractor compliance documents.

Accounts Receivable

  • Generate customer invoices and progress billings.
  • Track collections and outstanding balances.
  • Follow up on overdue accounts.
  • Prepare AIA billings and construction draws when applicable.

Construction Job Costing

  • Allocate labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor costs to specific projects.
  • Monitor project budgets against actual costs.
  • Analyze project profitability and cost overruns.
  • Provide detailed job-cost reports to project managers and owners.

Payroll Administration

  • Process weekly or biweekly payroll for office and field employees.
  • Track prevailing wage and certified payroll requirements.
  • Manage employee benefits, deductions, and payroll taxes.
  • Prepare W-2s and other payroll-related reports.

Compliance & Reporting

  • Prepare sales tax and payroll tax filings.
  • Maintain contractor licenses, insurance certificates, and permits.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Assist with audits and year-end tax preparation.

Cash Flow Management

  • Monitor company cash flow.
  • Forecast upcoming expenditures and project funding needs.
  • Coordinate with management regarding financial planning and budgeting.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
  • 3-5+ years of bookkeeping experience.
  • 2+ years of construction accounting experience preferred.
