About Opportunity
A successful, privately held organization in the agriculture and production sector is seeking an experienced Director of Finance to serve as its senior financial leader. This is a highly visible, hands-on leadership role responsible for overseeing all aspects of accounting, financial reporting, cash management, budgeting, forecasting, cost accounting, and financial strategy.
The ideal candidate is equally comfortable managing day-to-day accounting operations and providing strategic financial guidance to executive leadership. This position offers the opportunity to play a key role in business planning, operational decision-making, and long-term growth while leading and developing a dedicated accounting and administrative team.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Accounting
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes.
- Ensure timely and accurate preparation of financial statements.
- Maintain oversight of the general ledger and all accounting records.
- Supervise accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll accounting, reconciliations, accruals, and other accounting functions.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies.
- Coordinate with external CPA firms on tax planning, filings, and year-end reporting.
- Develop and maintain strong internal controls and accounting procedures.
Cost Accounting & Inventory Management
- Lead and enhance cost accounting processes.
- Maintain accurate inventory valuation and financial reporting for inventory-related transactions.
- Partner with operations and production teams to evaluate labor, materials, overhead, and other key cost drivers.
- Analyze margins, inventory adjustments, variances, and production costs.
- Develop reporting tools that improve visibility into operational and customer profitability.
- Oversee periodic inventory reviews, reconciliations, and valuation processes.
Cash Flow & Treasury Management
- Build and manage short-term and long-term cash flow forecasts.
- Monitor liquidity, working capital, receivables, payables, inventory investments, and debt obligations.
- Provide leadership with regular cash flow and financial position updates.
- Manage relationships with banks and lending institutions.
- Support financing activities, debt management, and capital planning.
- Recommend strategies to optimize cash flow and working capital performance.
Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis
- Lead annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
- Analyze actual results against budgets and prior-year performance.
- Identify financial variances and work with department leaders to understand underlying causes.
- Develop financial models to support strategic decisions, capital investments, pricing initiatives, staffing plans, and growth opportunities.
- Create and maintain key financial performance indicators (KPIs).
- Translate complex financial information into actionable business insights.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and administrative staff.
- Establish clear responsibilities, procedures, and performance expectations.
- Manage hiring, onboarding, training, and employee development.
- Implement cross-training and succession planning practices.
- Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, accuracy, and confidentiality.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Support ongoing optimization of ERP and financial reporting systems.
- Improve integration between accounting, inventory, purchasing, production, and sales functions.
- Identify opportunities for automation, enhanced reporting, and stronger internal controls.
- Partner with department leaders to ensure accurate, timely, and actionable business data.
Risk Management & External Partnerships
- Manage relationships with external accountants, lenders, insurance providers, and benefits partners.
- Assist with insurance and employee benefits renewals and evaluations.
- Prepare financial reporting required by lenders, insurers, and regulatory agencies.
- Support executive leadership in discussions with financial stakeholders and business advisors.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited institution.
- Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
- At least 2-3 years in a Controller, Director of Finance, Assistant Controller, or similar financial leadership role.
- Experience managing and developing accounting teams.
- Direct ownership of monthly close processes and financial statement preparation.
- Strong cost accounting and inventory accounting experience.
- Demonstrated expertise in cash flow forecasting and financial planning.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, and variance analysis.
- Experience working in a small to mid-sized business environment.
- Advanced Excel and financial analysis skills.
- Experience with ERP or integrated accounting systems.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
- High level of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in agriculture, horticulture, manufacturing, distribution, or other inventory-intensive industries.
- Experience in privately held or family-owned businesses.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central or similar ERP systems.
- Experience working with external auditors, tax advisors, banks, and financial institutions.
- Experience managing banking, insurance, and employee benefits relationships.
- Strong background in inventory management, operational reporting, and ERP-based cost accounting.
