Lead Hand & Driver – Landscape Construction

Location: Toronto, ON (Near O’Connor Dr & Bermondsey Rd)
Employment Type: Full-time, Seasonal
Salary: $28–$36 per hour, commensurate with experience and skill set
Reports To: Crew Leader
Hours: 45–55 hours per week

Position Summary

The Lead Hand & Driver will perform landscape construction tasks including reading plans and job packages, site staging, ordering materials, coordinating subtrades, directing and training staff on job site tasks, and communicating and working with the project manager and client.

 

The role includes heavy landscape construction, site demolitions and excavations, hard and soft installations, and project budget reviews.

Compensation

• Pay Rate: $28-36/hr (based on experience)
• Overtime Pay: 1.5% after 88 hours per two weeks
• Vacation Pay: 4%
• Medical and Dental Benefits: After 1 years of employment
• Group RRSP: After 1 year of employment
• PPE and Uniform Allowance

Key Responsibilities

• Comply with Occupational Health & Safety Act regulations, including OHSA Section 27: Duties of Supervisor.
• Review construction sites to identify and eliminate potential hazards.
• Ensure all required PPE and safety equipment is used by crew members.
• Conduct job site safety inspections and toolbox talks.
• Train crew members to improve craftsmanship in horticulture, hardscapes, softscapes, carpentry, masonry, equipment operation and maintenance.
• Train crew members on optimal workflow to maximize efficiency and productivity.
• Complete performance reviews with lead hands/drivers and labourers.
• Complete daily progress reports and meetings on site with the project manager.
• Drive a 5-ton or larger truck with trailer.
• Remain attentive to CBYD (Call Before You Dig) locate reports.
• Perform craftsperson duties on site as required.

Qualifications & Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid G-Class Driver’s Licence.
• 10 years or more of landscape construction experience.
• Proficient in reading drawings and details and following job packages.
• Experience operating excavators, skid steers and articulated loaders.
• Experience driving trucks with trailers.

• Training: Experienced in working with and training staff on job skills.

Working Conditions

• Full-time, seasonal position, with the opportunity for a non-seasonal position should one become available.
• Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather.
• Workday starts at 7:00 a.m. on site and 6:30 a.m. in the yard.
• 45–55 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with optional Saturdays.
• The company works to provide long weekends off for all employees.
• The position is highly physical in nature and requires the ability to lift weights of up to 50 lbs.
• Frequent repetitive tasks are required.
• Requires an elevated level of personal organization, motivation and social intelligence.
