Job Summary

The Manual Lathe Operator is responsible for setting up and operating manual lathes and other conventional machining equipment to manufacture, modify, repair, and maintain precision metal components according to engineering drawings, specifications, and quality standards. This position requires attention to detail, knowledge of machining practices, and the ability to safely operate shop equipment in a production environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate manual lathes to machine metal and other materials to required dimensions and tolerances.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, sketches, and work instructions.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, work holding devices, speeds, and feeds for machining operations.
  • Perform turning, facing, threading, boring, drilling, reaming, and taper cutting operations.
  • Measure and inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, and gauges.
  • Verify product quality and ensure compliance with specifications and established tolerances.
  • Perform machine adjustments and tool changes as required during production.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with company safety policies.
  • Conduct routine machine maintenance, lubrication, and housekeeping tasks.
  • Assist with troubleshooting machining issues and recommend process improvements.
  • Work closely with supervisors, machinists, and quality personnel to meet production goals and deadlines.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical or vocational training in machining preferred.

Experience

  • Previous experience operating manual lathes in a manufacturing or machine shop environment preferred.
  • Experience machining a variety of materials including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and plastics is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of machining principles, metal cutting processes, and shop mathematics.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Proficiency in the use of precision measuring instruments.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Good problem-solving and mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to safely operate shop equipment and tools.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent standing and walking throughout the work shift.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, reaching, and manual dexterity required.
  • Ability to safely work around moving machinery, cutting tools, and metal components.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including safety glasses, hearing protection, and steel-toe footwear.

Work Environment

  • Manufacturing and machine shop environment.
  • Regular exposure to machine noise, metal chips, lubricants, and coolants.
  • Primarily day shift schedule, typically 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
  • Occasional extended hours may be required, including shifts as early as 6:00 AM and as late as 5:00 PM to meet production demands.
  • Night shift work is rare and infrequent.
  • No travel required.
