Engine Mechanic — Job Description

Position Summary:
The Engine Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining engines and related mechanical systems. This position requires strong mechanical knowledge, troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and the ability to safely perform repairs and preventative maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain gasoline and/or diesel engines.

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacement, fluid checks, and tune-ups.

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and fuel-system problems using diagnostic equipment and testing procedures.

  • Repair or replace engine components such as belts, hoses, pumps, gaskets, bearings, starters, alternators, and other related parts.

  • Disassemble and reassemble engines and mechanical components as needed.

  • Perform engine adjustments, repairs, and rebuilds according to manufacturer specifications.

  • Test equipment and engines after repairs to ensure proper operation and performance.

  • Identify potential mechanical issues and recommend necessary repairs or preventative maintenance.

  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, parts used, and maintenance performed.

  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop equipment.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.

  • Follow manufacturer specifications, workplace safety procedures, and applicable regulations.

  • Communicate repair findings and recommendations clearly to supervisors, customers, or other team members.

  • Work efficiently to complete repairs and maintenance within established timeframes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience as an engine mechanic, diesel mechanic, automotive mechanic, or equipment mechanic.

  • Strong understanding of mechanical and engine systems.

  • Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical problems.

  • Experience using diagnostic tools and mechanical equipment.

  • Ability to read service manuals, repair manuals, and technical diagrams.

  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Relevant technical training or certifications are a plus.
