Pay

What You'll Do

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, rebuild, and maintain locomotives, air compressors, and related equipment.
  • Perform both mechanical and electrical repairs, including rewiring, component replacement, troubleshooting, and system upgrades.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Install control systems, remote-control systems, and engine heating systems.
  • Tear down and rebuild air compressors and engine components.
  • Use measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers to inspect and overhaul components.
  • Perform welding, cutting, and basic fabrication as needed.
  • Operate forklifts and other shop equipment safely.
  • Travel to customer locations to perform service work and repairs.
  • Communicate directly with customers, provide updates, and manage expectations throughout projects.
  • Supervise and lead assigned helpers, ensuring work is completed safely and efficiently.
  • Complete service reports and communicate findings to management.

Qualifications

  • Valid Illinois Class C Driver's License required.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Trade school training or equivalent experience in mechanical, electrical, diesel engine, locomotive, or industrial maintenance.
  • Minimum 2.5 years of related mechanical and/or electrical experience preferred.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and technical documents.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Leadership skills and the ability to manage assigned helpers.

Work Environment

  • Work is performed both in the shop and at customer locations.
  • Must be willing to travel to off-site job locations.
  • Occasional overnight stays are required.
  • Must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Significant overtime is available and often required based on workload and customer needs.
  • Must be able to lift, climb, bend, work around heavy equipment, and perform physically demanding tasks.
