Director of Finance

Location: Laramie, Wyoming
Salary Range: $83,000 - $87,500
Reports To: Chief Financial Officer (CFO)

Position Summary

The Director of Finance works closely with the Chief Financial Officer to oversee the financial activities of the Foundation and support the organization's mission through sound financial stewardship. This position is responsible for managing day-to-day financial operations, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and internal controls, supporting financial planning and reporting, and helping strengthen the Foundation's long-term financial health.

The Director of Finance also serves as an ambassador for the Foundation, representing the organization in communities across Wyoming through outreach, engagement, and relationship-building efforts as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Financial Management & Operations

  • Manage the Foundation's daily financial operations, including general ledger activities, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and financial reporting.
  • Assist the CFO with budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial planning.
  • Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
  • Monitor organizational financial performance and identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
  • Ensure proper accounting treatment and documentation of gifts, grants, endowments, and other nonprofit transactions.
  • Coordinate and support annual audits and external financial reviews.

Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard organizational assets.
  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), nonprofit accounting standards, and applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Assist in monitoring fund restrictions and grant compliance requirements.
  • Support the preparation of tax filings, including Form 990 and other required regulatory reports.

Strategic Support

  • Partner with the CFO and leadership team to provide financial analysis and decision-support tools.
  • Develop and improve financial processes, systems, and reporting capabilities.
  • Utilize technology to streamline operations and enhance organizational effectiveness.
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives that advance the Foundation's mission and sustainability.

Community Engagement

  • Represent the Foundation at meetings, community events, and stakeholder gatherings throughout Wyoming.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with donors, nonprofit partners, community leaders, and other stakeholders.
  • Support the Foundation's commitment to charitable giving, community impact, and statewide engagement.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Current CPA (Certified Public Accountant) certification.
  • Minimum of five years of progressive accounting or finance experience, with increasing levels of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit accounting principles and financial management practices.
  • Strong technology skills, including proficiency with accounting software, Microsoft Excel, and financial reporting systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working within a nonprofit, foundation, or charitable organization.
  • Knowledge of endowment, investment, grantmaking, or fund accounting practices.
  • Familiarity with donor databases and nonprofit financial management systems.
