Position Summary:
The Estate Tax Manager is responsible for overseeing estate, gift, trust, and fiduciary tax planning and compliance services for high-net-worth individuals, families, family offices, trusts, and estates. This role provides strategic tax guidance, manages complex estate tax engagements, ensures regulatory compliance, and collaborates with attorneys, financial advisors, executors, trustees, and internal stakeholders to develop tax-efficient wealth transfer strategies.
The Estate Tax Manager serves as a technical resource on federal and state estate tax matters while leading client relationships and mentoring tax professionals.
Key Responsibilities:
Estate and Trust Tax Compliance
- Prepare, review, and oversee federal and state estate, gift, and fiduciary income tax returns, including:
- Form 706 (United States Estate Tax Return)
- Form 709 (United States Gift Tax Return)
- Form 1041 (U.S. Income Tax Return for Estates and Trusts)
- Ensure timely filing and compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations.
- Review trust accounting and estate administration records for tax reporting accuracy.
Estate Planning and Advisory Services:
- Develop and implement estate, gift, and wealth transfer strategies.
- Advise clients on tax-efficient succession planning and asset transfer structures.
- Evaluate estate tax exposure and recommend techniques to minimize tax liabilities.
- Assist in business succession planning, charitable giving strategies, and family wealth preservation initiatives.
- Analyze the impact of legislative and regulatory changes on client estate plans.
Client Relationship Management:
- Serve as the primary advisor for assigned estate and trust clients.
- Build and maintain long-term relationships with clients, attorneys, trustees, executors, and financial advisors.
- Conduct client meetings and present planning recommendations.
- Respond to complex tax inquiries and provide technical guidance.
Tax Research and Technical Expertise:
- Conduct research on estate, gift, generation-skipping transfer (GST), trust, and fiduciary tax issues.
- Interpret federal and state tax laws and regulations.
- Prepare technical memoranda and planning analyses.
- Support clients during IRS examinations, audits, and dispute resolution processes.
Leadership and Team Management:
- Manage multiple engagements and project deadlines simultaneously.
- Review work prepared by senior tax associates and staff.
- Train, mentor, and develop tax professionals.
- Assist with department workflow planning, resource allocation, and quality control initiatives.
- Participate in recruiting and onboarding activities.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related field required.
Master's degree in Taxation, Accounting, or related discipline preferred.
Certifications:
One or more of the following preferred:
Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
Juris Doctor (JD)
Master of Taxation (MST)
Certified Financial Planner (CFP)
Experience:
- 5-8+ years of progressive tax experience.
- Significant experience in estate, gift, trust, and fiduciary taxation.
- Experience managing client engagements and supervising staff.
- Public accounting, wealth management, family office, or tax advisory experience preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Advanced knowledge of estate, gift, trust, fiduciary, and generation-skipping transfer tax rules.
- Strong understanding of wealth transfer planning strategies.
- Knowledge of federal and state tax regulations and compliance requirements.
- Exceptional research and analytical skills.
- Strong project management and organizational abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to explain complex tax matters to clients and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proficiency with tax preparation and research software.
- Strong leadership, coaching, and client service skills.
