Position Summary

The Drafter turns rough sketches, architectural drawings, field measurements, notes and concepts provided by architects, engineers and project personnel into accurate technical drawings and digital blueprints. Using AutoCAD and related computer-aided design software, this position creates detailed two-dimensional and three-dimensional drawings for metal products, components and assemblies. The work supports customer approval, fabrication, assembly and production.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Create accurate 2D drawings and 3D models using AutoCAD and other approved CAD software.

Convert rough sketches, notes, concepts, architectural plans and engineering instructions into detailed technical drawings.

Review architectural and engineering documents to identify dimensions, specifications, materials and project requirements.

Prepare shop drawings, submittal drawings, fabrication drawings and assembly details.

Clearly identify dimensions, tolerances, materials, finishes, hardware and other manufacturing specifications.

Revise drawings based on engineering changes, customer comments, field measurements and approved markups.

Verify that drawings are complete, accurate and suitable for manufacturing before release.

Work closely with engineers, project managers, production personnel and other departments to resolve design or fabrication questions.

Prepare and release approved drawings and related documentation to the production team.

Support projects involving metal framing systems, laboratory furniture, pipe supports, brackets, hangers and custom-fabricated metal products.

Maintain organized electronic drawing files, project records and revision histories.

Follow established drafting standards, naming conventions and document-control procedures.

Assist with bills of materials, product specifications and other supporting documentation when required.

Review completed work for accuracy, quality, manufacturability and compliance with project requirements.

Manage multiple projects and deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy.

Visit production or warehouse areas as needed to verify measurements, review components or discuss fabrication requirements.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Formal coursework, certificate or associate degree in drafting, CAD, engineering technology, mechanical design or a related field is preferred.

Previous experience working as a Drafter, CAD Technician, Engineering Drafter or in a similar position.

Proficiency in AutoCAD, including the creation and revision of detailed 2D technical drawings.

Experience creating or working with 3D models.

Ability to read and interpret architectural plans, engineering drawings, technical specifications and fabrication details.

Knowledge of drafting fundamentals, including dimensions, tolerances, scale, views, sections and standard drawing practices.

Strong computer skills and experience managing electronic drawings and technical files.

Ability to accurately translate sketches, notes and verbal instructions into production-ready drawings.

Strong attention to detail, organization and quality.

Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to work independently while collaborating with engineers, project managers and production employees.

Ability to manage priorities and complete assignments within established deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

Two or more years of drafting experience in metal fabrication, manufacturing, construction products, laboratory furniture or a related industry.

Experience preparing shop drawings, fabrication drawings and customer submittals.

Familiarity with sheet metal, structural steel, strut channel systems, brackets, supports, welded assemblies or custom metal products.

Working knowledge of manufacturing processes such as cutting, forming, machining and welding.

Experience with SolidWorks, Inventor or other 3D design software is a plus.

Familiarity with bills of materials, revision control and document-management procedures.

Understanding of common industry drafting standards and manufacturing tolerances.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position primarily works at a computer in an office environment but may require occasional entry into active manufacturing, production or warehouse areas. The employee may occasionally be required to stand, walk, bend, reach, inspect products and use measuring tools. The employee must follow all required personal protective equipment and workplace safety procedures when entering operational areas.

Attendance and Safety Requirements

Reliable attendance, punctuality, and compliance with workplace safety rules are essential functions of this position. Unscheduled absences, repeated tardiness, and poor attendance will not be tolerated.

 

For safety reasons, personal cellular phones, earbuds, headphones, and headsets are strictly prohibited while working or inside active warehouse areas unless specifically authorized by management. Employees observed by warehouse leadership using or wearing a prohibited device will be subject to disciplinary action.
