Position Summary

The Building Materials Sales Representative and Estimator is responsible for helping contractors, builders, and homeowners identify and purchase the materials needed for residential and commercial construction projects. This position prepares accurate material estimates and quotes, develops strong customer relationships, generates sales, and coordinates with purchasing, yard, and delivery teams to ensure orders are completed accurately and on time.

The ideal candidate has knowledge of construction materials, the ability to read blueprints and building plans, strong mathematical and organizational skills, and a genuine commitment to customer service.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Sales and Customer Service

  • Assist contractors, builders, remodelers, and homeowners with selecting appropriate building materials.
  • Build and maintain long-term relationships with new and existing customers.
  • Respond promptly to customer inquiries by phone, email, and in person.
  • Identify customer needs and recommend products based on project specifications, budget, and timeline.
  • Prepare and present quotes, proposals, product information, and available alternatives.
  • Follow up on outstanding estimates and sales opportunities.
  • Generate new business through customer outreach, referrals, job-site visits, and relationship development.
  • Stay informed about company products, pricing, promotions, availability, and industry trends.
  • Resolve customer questions, order discrepancies, product concerns, and delivery issues professionally.
  • Provide accurate information without making unauthorized promises regarding pricing, availability, or delivery dates.

Estimating and Material Takeoffs

  • Review blueprints, construction plans, specifications, sketches, and customer-provided measurements.
  • Complete accurate material takeoffs for residential and commercial construction projects.
  • Calculate material quantities for projects involving lumber, roofing, siding, insulation, windows, doors, drywall, decking, hardware, and other building products.
  • Prepare detailed estimates that include material descriptions, quantities, pricing, taxes, delivery charges, and applicable fees.
  • Confirm project scope and clarify missing or conflicting information before finalizing estimates.
  • Recommend practical material alternatives when products are unavailable or project costs exceed the customer’s budget.
  • Maintain organized records of estimates, revisions, customer approvals, and project documentation.
  • Review completed estimates for accuracy before submitting them to customers or processing orders.
  • Revise estimates when plans, specifications, pricing, or customer needs change.
  • Clearly communicate that estimates are based on the plans and information provided and may require adjustment if project conditions change.

Order and Project Coordination

  • Convert approved estimates into accurate sales orders.
  • Verify product quantities, pricing, special-order requirements, and delivery instructions.
  • Coordinate with purchasing, inventory, yard, warehouse, and delivery personnel.
  • Monitor product availability and communicate delays, substitutions, or backorders to customers.
  • Track active projects and help ensure materials are available according to the customer’s construction schedule.
  • Coordinate special orders and verify applicable deposits, lead times, and return restrictions.
  • Communicate with customers before and after delivery to confirm satisfaction and address concerns.
  • Process returns, credits, and order adjustments in accordance with company policy.
  • Maintain accurate customer, project, sales, and estimating information in company systems.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in building-material sales, construction estimating, lumber sales, residential construction, commercial construction, or a related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of lumber, roofing, siding, windows, doors, hardware, and other construction materials preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, measurements, and specifications.
  • Strong mathematical skills, including the ability to calculate dimensions, square footage, linear footage, quantities, waste factors, and pricing.
  • Strong sales, customer-service, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple estimates, customer requests, and project deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Proficiency with computers, email, point-of-sale systems, estimating software, and Microsoft Office or similar programs.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with other departments.
  • Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record may be required for customer or job-site visits.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience in building-material sales, estimating, or construction.
  • Experience completing material takeoffs from blueprints.
  • Familiarity with local building practices and commonly used construction products.
  • Established relationships with local contractors, builders, or construction professionals.
  • Experience using building-material estimating or takeoff software.
