BESS Quality Lead

Reports to: Project Manager

Location: Project Site (Travel Required)

Our client is a leading developer, owner, and operator of utility-scale renewable energy projects specializing in utility-scale solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS). They are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented BESS Quality Lead to support on-site construction and commissioning activities for a large-scale battery energy storage project.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Project Manager, the BESS Quality Lead is responsible for supporting the execution of the project's Quality Management System (QMS) throughout construction and commissioning. This role performs field inspections, verifies installation quality, manages quality documentation, tracks non-conformance issues, and works closely with engineering, construction, contractors, and equipment vendors to ensure compliance with contract requirements, applicable codes, safety standards, and manufacturer specifications.

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and compliant installation and commissioning of utility-scale battery energy storage systems.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Support the Project Manager in verifying implementation of the contractor's Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) program and report non-conformance issues.
  • Perform routine field inspections and quality audits of BESS construction activities to verify compliance with approved drawings, specifications, installation standards, and project requirements.
  • Verify implementation of the Project Quality Plan, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), inspection checklists, and turnover documentation throughout construction and commissioning.
  • Identify, document, and track Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs), punch list items, and corrective actions while coordinating timely resolution with contractors, subcontractors, engineering teams, and equipment vendors.
  • Prepare quality reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing inspection data, equipment issues, process deficiencies, and quality trends.
  • Support supplier and vendor quality activities, including review of manufacturing documentation, Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) reports, shipping inspections, and Site Acceptance Test (SAT) documentation.
  • Review RFIs, submittals, field change requests, installation procedures, commissioning plans, and work packages from a quality perspective.
  • Validate installation quality through field inspections, photographic documentation, inspection reports, and as-built verification.
  • Monitor and analyze quality metrics related to defects, rework, equipment performance, and continuous improvement opportunities.
  • Maintain accurate quality records, inspection reports, turnover packages, test results, and compliance documentation within project document management systems.
  • Coordinate with Engineering, Safety, Construction, and Project Management teams to ensure compliance with OSHA requirements, applicable electrical codes, local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Participate in daily field walks, construction coordination meetings, and safety briefings.
  • Support commissioning readiness by confirming inspections, testing documentation, and turnover packages are complete prior to system energization and project handover.
  • Verify construction activities are completed in accordance with the latest Issued for Construction (IFC) drawings, specifications, and document revisions.
  • Attend daily toolbox talks and contractor coordination meetings to ensure work complies with project specifications, approved design documents, safety requirements, and installation standards.
  • Identify and report installation practices, materials, or workmanship that do not meet manufacturer recommendations, project specifications, or applicable codes, and assist with corrective action resolution.
  • Verify calibration records for inspection and testing equipment used onsite.
  • Prepare daily reports documenting construction progress, quality observations, non-compliance issues, safety observations, and schedule impacts.
  • Assist with preparation and maintenance of project documentation, daily reports, inspection logs, and turnover records.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) experience supporting renewable energy, battery energy storage, power generation, substations, transmission, or industrial construction projects.
  • Working knowledge of Quality Management Systems (QMS), inspection processes, NCR management, corrective actions, and document control.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, installation standards, and construction sequencing.
  • General understanding of power generation and electrical equipment.
  • Familiarity with applicable standards including OSHA, NEC, NFPA, and other relevant electrical and construction codes.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in active construction environments and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk, climb, bend, kneel, stand for extended periods, and traverse uneven terrain.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
