Electrician – HVAC Service & Installation

Job Summary

The Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and upgrading electrical systems associated with residential and/or commercial HVAC equipment. This position ensures all electrical work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with local, state, and national electrical codes. The Electrician works closely with HVAC technicians, installers, project managers, and customers to provide high-quality service and ensure customer satisfaction.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Electrical Installation

Install electrical wiring, conduit, panels, disconnects, breakers, transformers, and controls for HVAC systems.
Install power supplies for furnaces, air conditioners, heat pumps, rooftop units, mini-splits, boilers, ventilation systems, and refrigeration equipment.
Install dedicated electrical circuits for HVAC equipment.
Wire thermostats, relays, contactors, sensors, control boards, and low-voltage systems.
Install emergency shutoffs and disconnect switches.
Install surge protection and grounding systems as required.
Read and interpret electrical blueprints, wiring diagrams, and HVAC schematics.

Troubleshooting & Repair

Diagnose electrical issues affecting HVAC equipment.
Repair electrical failures including:
- Short circuits
- Open circuits
- Ground faults
- Failed breakers
- Burned wiring
- Defective relays
- Capacitors
- Contactors
- Transformers
- Motors
- Electrical controls
Test voltage, amperage, resistance, continuity, and electrical loads.
Replace defective electrical components.
Troubleshoot communication between thermostats and HVAC equipment.

Maintenance

Perform preventive maintenance on electrical systems serving HVAC equipment.
Inspect electrical panels and connections.
Tighten electrical connections.
Verify proper grounding and bonding.
Replace worn wiring and components before failure.
Test safety devices and electrical protection systems.

Code Compliance & Safety

Ensure all installations comply with:
- National Electrical Code (NEC)
- Local building codes
- OSHA regulations
- Company safety policies
Maintain a safe work environment.
Properly use lockout/tagout procedures.
Wear required PPE.
Maintain electrical permits and inspection requirements when applicable.

Project Support

Coordinate electrical work with HVAC installation teams.
Communicate with supervisors regarding project status.
Assist with job planning and material requirements.
Complete work within project schedules.
Support emergency service calls when necessary.

Customer Service

Communicate professionally with customers.
Explain electrical repairs and recommendations.
Answer customer questions.
Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Provide exceptional customer service while representing the company.

Documentation

Complete service reports and work orders.
Document repairs, installations, and inspections.
Record materials used and labor hours.
Maintain accurate inventory of assigned tools and equipment.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or GED.
Valid Electrician License (Journeyman or Master, as required by state/local regulations).
Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
Minimum 3–5 years of electrical experience (HVAC experience preferred).
Strong knowledge of:
- Residential electrical systems
- Commercial electrical systems
- HVAC electrical controls
- Low-voltage wiring
- High-voltage systems
- NEC requirements
Ability to read electrical schematics and blueprints.
Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications

HVAC industry experience.
Experience with:
- Heat pumps
- VRF systems
- Mini-split systems
- Commercial rooftop units
- Boilers
- Building automation systems (BAS)
- Smart thermostats
- Generator connections
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification.
EPA Certification (preferred but not required).
Experience with energy management systems.
