Express Employment Professionals is hiring on behalf of our client for a Controls & Automation Technician.
Pay: $30-$38/hr. DOE
Schedule: Monday-Friday 7 AM-3:30 PM
Position Summary
The Controls & Automation Technician works independently with minimal supervision to build, program, troubleshoot, and maintain automation and control systems. This role supports production operations by resolving equipment issues, improving system performance, and assisting with preventive and predictive maintenance activities.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Build & Automation Development
- Build and install new automation and control systems.
- Assist with equipment design, qualification, wiring, software installation, and programming.
- Program PLCs, HMIs, robots, and associated automation equipment.
- Coordinate with outside vendors and contractors on automation projects.
Troubleshooting & Repair
- Diagnose and repair automated production equipment.
- Troubleshoot electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and control systems.
- Replace and configure sensors, controls, and automation components as needed.
- Support production teams by minimizing downtime and restoring equipment operation quickly.
Engineering & Documentation
- Partner with Process Engineering to develop automation equipment specifications and parts lists.
- Maintain and update equipment documentation, including:
- Wiring diagrams
- P&IDs
- Electrical and instrumentation records
- Spare parts inventories
Preventive & Predictive Maintenance
- Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on automated equipment and electrical systems.
- Conduct thermal imaging, megger testing, and other diagnostic inspections.
- Monitor electrical systems under 500V AC/DC and identify potential issues before failures occur.
- Complete assigned electrical maintenance activities and support maintenance planning efforts.
Process Optimization & Safety
- Work with engineering teams to improve equipment performance, efficiency, and reliability.
- Review and maintain machine safety systems and automation safeguards.
- Ensure automation systems comply with safety standards and best practices.
Additional Duties
- Support electrical installations and upgrades.
- Assist with ordering supplies and maintaining inventory.

Qualifications
Required Knowledge & Experience
- PLC programming experience and industrial controls knowledge.
- Familiarity with one or more of the following systems preferred:
- Allen-Bradley
- Click PLC
- Siemens S7-300
- Direct Automation PLCs
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical and automation systems using diagnostic tools such as:
- Digital Multimeters (DMM)
- Meggers
- Other electronic testing equipment
- Ability to read and interpret:
- Electrical schematics
- Technical drawings
- Blueprints
- P&IDs
- Knowledge of Lockout/Tagout/Tryout (LOTOTO) procedures and machine safety systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and fabrication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Education & Training
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of two years of college coursework, technical training, apprenticeships, or equivalent experience in:
- Electrical systems
- Electronics
- Industrial automation
- Automated machinery
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, and use of hands and arms.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds regularly.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including equipment necessary for energized electrical work.
- Ability to communicate effectively and read, write, and understand English.
Work Environment
This position is based in a manufacturing environment and may include work outdoors when needed. Employees may be exposed to:
- Varying temperatures and weather conditions

- Chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, and other industrial hazards
Required PPE may include:
