Job Title: Senior Accountant
Reports To: Controller / Director of Accounting and Finance
Position Summary
The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing/overseeing core accounting functions, with a strong focus on commission accounting and reconciliation, as well as supporting month-end close and day-to-day accounting operations. This role requires an adaptable, highly hands-on accounting professional with strong analytical skills and attention to detail, capable of operating effectively in a transaction-heavy, lean environment and motivated to grow into increased responsibility over time.
Key Responsibilities
Commission Revenue Accounting
• Responsible for overseeing tasks supporting the correct accrual and reporting of
commission revenue earned (invoice order, reconciliation, investigate and resolve
discrepancies, monitor payment, apply payment)
• Review and prepare commission reconciliation between vendor statements, various deductions, and chargebacks against internal commission records
• Analyze and reconcile vendor statements, deductions, chargebacks, and trade
promotions
• Partner with sales and operations to resolve discrepancies and ensure accurate
commission payouts
• Manage communication with vendor to ensure accurate commission payouts
Core Accounting (Close, Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable)
• Assist in full-cycle accounting activities, including journal entries, accruals,
estimates, reconciliations, and month-end close and year-end close process
• Ensure compliance with GAAP and internal accounting policies
• Prepare bank reconciliations and balance sheet reviews
• Assist overseeing accounts receivable and accounts payable processes
• Monitor collections and follow up on open balances
• Assist to ensure timely vendor and expense report payments and proper coding
• Prepare and assist with various tax and business filings
• Assist in preparing and coordinating with external CPA firm for tax filings
Other Duties
Review work and provide guidance to accounting staff
Improve and document accounting processes in a lean environment
Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and profitability analysis
Perform ad hoc reporting and analysis requests, other accounting and
administrative tasks as needed
Qualifications
Required
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
• 4–5 years of accounting experience, preferably in food brokerage, wholesale, or
distribution
• Strong understanding of GAAP and hands-on month-end close
• Experience with commission-based accounting (commissions, deductions,
chargebacks, and promotion spend) preferred
• Experience in supervising staff
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially with Excel (basics, pivot tables,
VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, basic formulas reconciliations)
• Experience with accounting software (QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar)
Preferred
• Experience working in a small lean business environment
• Experience with food industry (brokerage, wholesale, distribution, etc.) accounting
• Exposure to commission-based accounting, deductions, or promotional spend
• CPA
