Part-Time Housing Inspector - $20

Position Summary

The Housing Inspector is responsible for ensuring that rental units participating in the program meet all applicable standards, local building codes, and agency policies. This role conducts inspections, documents deficiencies, and works collaboratively with landlords, tenants, and staff to maintain safe, sanitary, and compliant housing conditions.


Key Responsibilities

 

  • Conduct initial, bi-annual, special, and re-inspections of rental units
  • Assess units for compliance with quality standards, applicable building codes, and agency policies.
  • Read, interpret, and apply regulations, inspection standards, and local housing codes in the field.
  • Identify, document, and clearly communicate any deficiencies, violations, and required repairs.
  • Complete detailed and accurate inspection reports in a timely manner.
  • Maintain organized records of inspections, findings, and follow-up actions.
  • Schedule inspections efficiently while coordinating with landlords, tenants, and program staff.
  • Manage inspection workload to ensure all required inspections are completed within program timelines.
  • Interact professionally and tactfully with landlords, tenants, coworkers, and the general public.
  • Provide clear explanations of inspection results, expectations, and required corrective actions.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or higher in a related field preferred.
  • Experience in housing inspections, property management, construction, code enforcement, or a related field preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to assess property conditions accurately.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret regulations and apply them consistently in real-world situations.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

Working Conditions & Requirements

  • Frequent travel within the service area for on-site inspections.
  • Ability to walk, climb stairs, and inspect properties in varying physical conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
