Quality Control (QC)

The Quality Control Technician supports safe, consistent production by inspecting raw materials, in-process product, and finished goods against company specifications and food safety requirements. This is a hands-on, production-floor role that reports to the Quality Assurance Supervisor. It is an ideal entry point for someone who is detail-oriented, comfortable working in a food plant environment, and interested in building a career in food quality and safety. Training in our food safety program, testing methods, and documentation procedures is provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled inspections of raw materials, packaging, and finished product for weight, temperature, appearance, labeling, code dating, and seal integrity.
  • Conduct routine in-process checks (e.g., temperature, pH, moisture, metal detection/X-ray verification, net weight) and record results accurately and on time.
  • Collect and label product and environmental samples for microbiological and analytical testing; prepare samples for third-party lab shipment when required.
  • Verify Critical Control Points (CCPs) and prerequisite programs under the HACCP / Food Safety Plan and immediately escalate deviations to the QA Supervisor.
  • Perform pre-operational and sanitation verification inspections, including ATP swabbing and visual checks, and document findings.
  • Complete and maintain quality records (checklists, logs, hold tags, non-conformance reports) legibly and in compliance with Good Documentation Practices.
  • Place product on hold when specifications are not met, tag and segregate affected product, and assist with root-cause investigation and corrective actions.
  • Calibrate and verify inspection equipment (thermometers, scales, pH meters) according to schedule.
  • Monitor and reinforce Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), allergen controls, and personal hygiene requirements on the production floor.
  • Support internal audits and customer or regulatory inspections (FDA, USDA, SQF/BRCGS, customer audits) by pulling records and assisting the QA team.
  • Communicate clearly with production supervisors and line workers about quality issues in a respectful, solution-focused manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support quality and food safety objectives.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 1-2 years of experience in a food manufacturing, laboratory, warehouse, or other production environment. Recent graduates and candidates with related coursework are encouraged to apply.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow written procedures precisely.
  • Basic math skills (weights, measures, percentages, unit conversions) and the ability to read specifications.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English; bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
  • Basic computer skills, including data entry and Microsoft Excel/Word.
  • Willingness to work in cold, wet, or warm environments and around food allergens.
  • Availability to work assigned shift, including some weekends, overtime, and holidays as production requires.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree or coursework in Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Texas Food Handler or Food Manager certification.
  • Familiarity with HACCP, GMPs, SQF, BRCGS, or FSMA requirements.
  • Prior experience with lab equipment, sampling, or inspection documentation.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Stand and walk for extended periods on a production floor; frequent bending, reaching, and climbing of stairs or platforms.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs occasionally and 25 lbs regularly.
  • Work in refrigerated (34–40°F) or heated areas and in wet conditions with moderate noise.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment (hairnet, smock, gloves, safety shoes, hearing protection).
