Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Structural Steel Foreman to lead structural steel fabrication, welding, and assembly operations for complex commercial and industrial projects. This hands-on leadership position is ideal for a motivated player-coach who enjoys working alongside the team while overseeing daily production, maintaining quality standards, and ensuring safe project execution.
The ideal candidate has extensive experience in structural steel fabrication, welding, blueprint reading, crew supervision, and manufacturing operations. As the Structural Steel Foreman, you will coordinate fabrication activities, assign work, monitor production schedules, and ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.
This role serves as the critical link between project planning and shop or field execution while promoting safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, supervise, train, mentor, and develop structural steel welders, fitters, and fabrication personnel.
- Assign daily work based on production schedules, project priorities, and employee skill sets.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, safety, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure crews have the tools, equipment, and materials needed to perform work efficiently.
- Monitor productivity while maintaining quality and safety standards.
Structural Steel Fabrication & Welding
- Perform and oversee structural steel fabrication, fit-up, welding, and assembly operations.
- Supervise welding processes including GMAW (MIG), FCAW (Flux Core), and SMAW (Stick Welding).
- Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, project specifications, and welding procedures.
- Coordinate material handling and equipment operation, including cranes, hoists, and lifting devices.
- Ensure fabrication activities meet production schedules and customer specifications.
Quality Control
- Inspect completed fabrication and welding work to verify compliance with project specifications, customer requirements, AWS standards, and company quality expectations.
- Identify and resolve fabrication, fit-up, or welding issues before they impact production.
- Verify layout, alignment, dimensions, measurements, and weld quality throughout fabrication and assembly.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
- Conduct daily safety meetings and toolbox talks.
- Promote safe work practices while maintaining a clean, organized fabrication shop and work area.
- Monitor employee certifications, required training, and compliance documentation.
Project Coordination & Reporting
- Collaborate with Project Managers, Operations Leadership, and subcontractors to maintain production schedules and project timelines.
- Participate in planning meetings and production updates.
- Complete daily production reports, documentation, and progress tracking.
- Proactively identify challenges and implement solutions to keep projects on schedule and within budget.
Qualifications
Required Experience & Education
- Minimum 5 years of structural steel fabrication experience.
- Previous experience supervising welding or fabrication crews.
- Current AWS D1.1 Certification required.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Technical school training, trade certification, or related college coursework preferred.
Technical Skills
- Advanced ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and construction plans.
- Strong knowledge of AWS welding symbols, fabrication standards, and structural steel construction specifications.
- Proficiency in fabrication mathematics, geometry, measurements, and layout calculations.
- Experience operating welding equipment, fabrication machinery, layout tools, and precision measuring instruments.
- Working knowledge of structural steel manufacturing processes and fabrication best practices.
Physical & Travel Requirements
- Ability to travel to project sites, including occasional overnight travel.
- Comfortable working in manufacturing facilities and outdoor construction environments in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift, climb, stand for extended periods, and perform physically demanding work.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
