Grinder (Sheet Metal Fabrication)

Location: Luzerne, PA
Pay Rate: $18/hr
Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Position Summary

This role is responsible for grinding, smoothing, and finishing sheet metal components to meet quality standards and production requirements. The Grinder ensures all fabricated parts are free of sharp edges, surface defects, and imperfections prior to assembly or further processing. This position requires strong attention to detail, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to work both independently and within a team in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate hand grinders, bench grinders, belt sanders, and other finishing tools to remove burrs, weld spatter, sharp edges, and surface imperfections
• Inspect finished parts using measuring tools (calipers, gauges) and visual checks to ensure compliance with specifications and tolerances
• Read and interpret work orders, blueprints, and engineering drawings to determine finishing requirements
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area
• Identify and report defective materials, quality concerns, or equipment issues
• Perform routine maintenance and safety checks on tools and equipment
• Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Support continuous improvement initiatives and participate in team discussions as needed
• Work collaboratively with welders, machinists, and other team members to meet production goals

Qualifications

Education & Experience:

• High school diploma or GED required
• Prior experience in grinding or metal finishing within a fabrication or manufacturing environment preferred
• Experience operating hand and power grinding tools

Knowledge & Skills:

• Understanding of sheet metal materials and fabrication processes
• Ability to safely operate and maintain grinding and finishing equipment
• Basic ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and tolerances
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship
• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately
• Good hand-eye coordination, manual dexterity, and physical stamina
• Comfortable working in a noisy, dusty, and physically demanding environment
• Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs

Physical Requirements

• Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, and kneeling throughout the shift
• Continuous use of hands for handling tools, controls, and metal components
• Regular lifting up to 10 lbs, frequent lifting up to 25 lbs, and occasional lifting up to 50 lbs
• Visual acuity to read prints and inspect parts for quality and accuracy
• Awareness of surroundings while working near moving mechanical equipment
