Shop Technician – Heavy Equipment

Position Summary

Responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and rebuilding heavy construction, material handling, and industrial equipment in a shop environment. Performs mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine repairs while ensuring equipment is returned to customers in safe and reliable operating condition.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Equipment Inspection & Diagnostics

  • Inspect heavy equipment for mechanical and operational issues.
  • Diagnose hydraulic, electrical, diesel engine, transmission, and drivetrain problems.
  • Utilize diagnostic software, electronic testing equipment, and service manuals.
  • Perform troubleshooting to determine root causes of equipment failures.

Repair & Maintenance

  • Repair and maintain heavy construction equipment, forklifts, excavators, wheel loaders, cranes, and other machinery.
  • Remove, repair, and replace engines, transmissions, pumps, cylinders, and components.
  • Perform preventative maintenance services according to manufacturer specifications.
  • Conduct oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and fluid checks.
  • Rebuild engines, hydraulic systems, and major components when required.

Hydraulic & Electrical Systems

  • Troubleshoot hydraulic circuits and components.
  • Repair pumps, motors, valves, cylinders, and hydraulic hoses.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems, wiring harnesses, sensors, and control modules.
  • Calibrate and test electronic equipment systems.

Shop Operations

  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Complete work orders and repair documentation accurately.
  • Order and track parts needed for repairs.
  • Operate shop equipment safely, including forklifts, cranes, and lifting devices.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and OSHA requirements.

Quality Control

  • Test equipment following repairs.
  • Verify repairs meet manufacturer standards.
  • Conduct final inspections before equipment is returned to service.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction through quality workmanship.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience repairing heavy equipment, diesel engines, or industrial machinery.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • OEM certifications or diesel technician certifications preferred.
