Health and Safety Manager

 

Express Employment Professionals – Guelph is recruiting on behalf of a growing organization seeking a Health & Safety Manager (Safety Coordinator) to take ownership of safety programs and compliance.

This role is ideal for a hands-on safety professional who can step in quickly, lead by example, and drive accountability across teams. The position is approximately 70% Health & Safety and 30% HR support, working closely with leadership and operations to ensure employees are trained, compliant, and working safely.

 

What You’ll Do

Health & Safety Leadership

  • Develop, implement, and maintain company health and safety programs, policies, and procedures
  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with Ontario regulations and industry standards
  • Monitor safety performance and implement continuous improvement initiatives
  • Manage EHS systems (SiteDocs) and safety tracking tools

Workplace Inspections & Compliance

  • Conduct regular site inspections across Ontario (mostly within the Guelph and surrounding area)
  • Identify hazards, recommend corrective actions, and follow up to completion
  • Perform audits of tools, equipment, and job sites
  • Maintain compliance with third-party platforms (ISN, Avetta, ComplyWorks, ContractorCheck)

Training & Employee Support

  • Develop and deliver safety training programs (toolbox talks, orientations, online/in-person training)
  • Ensure employees maintain required certifications (e.g., Working at Heights)
  • Act as a resource for employees, providing guidance while holding teams accountable

Incident & Claims Management

  • Lead incident and accident investigations; prepare reports and track trends
  • Manage WSIB claims, return-to-work programs, and documentation
  • Investigate safety concerns and complaints and ensure timely resolution
  • Support HR with workplace investigations as needed

Team Collaboration & Communication

  • Chair weekly/daily safety meetings with crews
  • Facilitate monthly safety meetings with supervisors and leadership
  • Participate in and support Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings
  • Work closely with leadership on reporting, safety strategy, and compliance

HR Support (30%)

  • Assist with onboarding and employee training
  • Support performance reviews, disciplinary processes, and documentation
  • Contribute to building a positive, safety-focused workplace culture

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of health & safety experience (construction or similar industry preferred; general industry considered)
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario safety regulations and compliance requirements
  • Experience conducting site inspections, audits, and incident investigations
  • Ability to influence teams, enforce standards, and build positive working relationships
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Comfortable working independently and managing priorities
  • Willingness to learn and grow within the role

Additional Assets

  • Experience with working at heights training or certification oversight
  • Experience using SiteDocs or similar EHS systems
  • Exposure to HR functions (onboarding, employee relations)
  • CHRP designation (asset, not required)

Work Environment & Expectations

  • Travel required across Ontario for site inspections (~1 time per week; most sites within Tri-City area, approx. 1–1.5 hours)
  • Ability to work both in-office and in the field
  • Must be comfortable stepping into a role with minimal handover and taking initiative
