A porter (or day porter) is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation, and overall appearance of a facility or property. They bridge the gap between janitorial staff and customer service by handling light maintenance, waste management, and assisting guests while on-site. 
Common Core Responsibilities
Exact duties vary depending on the industry, but typical porter functions include:
  • Facility Maintenance: Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming floors, and dusting or wiping down surfaces. 
  • Sanitation: Cleaning and sanitizing high-traffic areas like lobbies, hallways, and restrooms, while ensuring supplies are fully stocked. 
  • Waste Management: Emptying trash and recycling bins throughout the day and managing waste disposal areas. 
  • Light Repairs: Performing basic maintenance tasks like replacing light bulbs, tightening fixtures, or changing air filters. 
  • Guest & Customer Service: Greeting visitors, answering questions, and—depending on the setting—handling luggage, deliveries, or setting up event spaces. 
  • Safety & Hazard Monitoring: Keeping walkways free of clutter, placing warning signs, and reporting major maintenance issues or safety hazards to management. 
Variations by Industry
  • Hospitality (Hotels/Resorts): Focus heavily on customer-facing duties, such as handling luggage, parking vehicles, and ensuring common areas remain pristine. 
  • Commercial/Retail (Day Porters): Act as the eyes and ears of the facility, cleaning up spills, maintaining curb appeal, and keeping the environment welcoming during business hours. 
  • Automotive: Involves moving vehicle inventory, providing shuttle services, and prepping cars for delivery or service. 
Typical Requirements & Skills
  • Physical Stamina: Must be able to stand for long periods, walk frequently, and regularly lift 40 to 50+ pounds.
  • Customer Skills: A friendly, helpful, and professional demeanor, as they frequently interact with the public.
  • Education & Experience: Typically requires a High School Diploma or GED. Previous janitorial, maintenance, or hospitality experience is frequently preferred
