Materials Control Manager/Engineer

 


We are seeking a detail-oriented and driven Materials & Estimating Engineer to support our steel pipe flange manufacturing operations (AWWA waterworks product line). This role is designed to strengthen our materials purchasing, estimating, and supply chain capabilities while providing cross-functional support to sales, production, and executive leadership.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong combination of manufacturing estimating experience, materials procurement knowledge, and mechanical aptitude, particularly within machining and steel environments.

 

Key Responsibilities

Estimating & Cost Analysis
- Prepare accurate cost estimates for flanges manufactured in our Texas facility
- Support sales and leadership with pricing analysis and project cost evaluations
- Analyze material, labor, and machining costs to ensure competitive and profitable bids

Materials Purchasing & Inventory Management
- Source and purchase steel plate and forged rings for manufacturing operations
- Manage inventory levels to meet turnover targets while supporting production and sales demand
- Develop and maintain supplier relationships, including domestic and overseas vendors

Procurement & Supply Coordination
- Issue and manage purchase orders for overseas flange procurement
- Monitor supplier performance, lead times, and delivery schedules
- Mitigate supply risks and ensure timely material availability

Production & Operations Support
- Assist with production order preparation and plate steel burn orders
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams to improve material flow and efficiency
- Provide backup support across sales, production, safety, and environmental functions

Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Support project managers, account managers, and executive leadership
- Serve as a key liaison between sales, procurement, and plant operations
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across the business

Qualifications Required:
- Minimum 5 years of experience in manufacturing estimating within an industrial environment
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a machining operation
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)

Preferred Skills & Experience
- Strong Excel skills (cost modeling, data analysis)
- Experience with steel plate, forgings, or industrial metal supply chains
- Knowledge of machining processes and fabrication methods
- Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
