Position Summary
The Electrical Design Engineer is a core technical role within COMPANY’ Engineering department, responsible for the design, documentation, and continuous improvement of solid-state AC motor controls, Soft Starters, and motor protection products. This position leads the end-to-end electrical design process — from concept and schematic development through panel layout, BOM creation, prototype validation, and production release — ensuring all designs meet applicable standards, customer specifications, and COMPANY’ world-class quality benchmarks. The ideal candidate brings direct experience in motor control or power electronics design and thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced manufacturing engineering environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Electrical Design & Schematic Development
- Lead the design and development of electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts for solid-state motor controls, soft starters, reduced voltage starters, and motor protection products.
- Design and specify electrical control panels including component selection, layout, and integration of power electronics such as SCRs, IGBTs, contactors, current/voltage sensors, and protection relays.
- Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), manufacturing instructions, and complete design documentation packages throughout the product lifecycle.
- Define design approaches for new products and product platforms, generating detailed design specifications and validation plans.
- Perform circuit analysis, load calculations, and thermal assessments to ensure design performance, reliability, and safety.
- Create and maintain designs using AutoCAD Electrical and/or Solid Works adhering to best practices for version control and documentation standards.
Standards Compliance & Quality
- Ensure all designs comply with applicable standards including UL508A, UL508C, NFPA 79, NEC, IEC 60947, and CE marking requirements as applicable.
- Support UL and third-party certification processes including preparation of technical files, test reports, and design documentation for product submissions.
- Conduct design reviews and approve schematics, wiring diagrams, and layout packages for both new and modified products.
- Apply quality tools including root cause analysis, FMEA, and 5S methodology to drive continuous improvement in design processes and product reliability.
- Identify and resolve design-related field issues through root cause investigation and corrective action implementation.
Product Development & Prototype Validation
- Build, evaluate, and validate prototypes and pre-production designs; develop and execute test procedures covering functional, environmental, and safety performance.
- Collaborate with the R&D and product management teams to define requirements and translate customer and application needs into engineered design solutions.
- Support new product introduction (NPI) processes from design freeze through first production release, coordinating with manufacturing and quality teams.
- Estimate time, cost, labor, and material requirements for design projects; communicate deviations from schedule or budget proactively.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Customer Support
- Interface with sales, application engineering, production, and customer service teams to resolve technical inquiries and support custom or application-specific designs.
- Provide technical support during system build, testing, and commissioning phases, occasional travel to customers or partner sites.
- Collaborate with manufacturing and supply chain teams to ensure designs are optimized for cost-effectiveness, manufacturability, and material availability.
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers and design staff as needed.
Documentation & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date engineering records, drawing packages, and revision histories in the company’s PDM/PLM system.
- Support engineering change order (ECN/ECO) processes including impact assessment, documentation updates, and production coordination.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives targeting design quality, efficiency, and cost reduction across the product portfolio.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology; equivalent combination of education and direct experience considered.
