Job Summary

The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel-powered trucks and related equipment used in commercial CDL operations. This role ensures all fleet vehicles meet Department of Transportation (DOT) safety standards and are kept in reliable, road-ready condition to support company operations.


Key Responsibilities

Vehicle Maintenance & Repair

  • Perform routine maintenance on Class A and Class B CDL trucks (oil changes, filter replacements, brake adjustments, etc.)
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues using diagnostic tools and manuals
  • Repair or replace defective components including engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension systems, and fuel systems
  • Conduct preventive maintenance services to minimize breakdowns and downtime

Inspections & Compliance

  • Perform DOT inspections and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections as needed
  • Maintain accurate service, inspection, and repair records
  • Ensure all trucks meet safety standards before returning to service

Troubleshooting & Diagnostics

  • Use computer diagnostic equipment and software to identify issues
  • Troubleshoot engine performance, emissions systems, and electronic control modules (ECMs)
  • Test vehicles after repair to ensure proper operation

Shop & Equipment Management

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of shop and tools
  • Properly use and care for diagnostic and repair equipment
  • Order parts and maintain inventory as needed

Safety & Team Collaboration

  • Follow all workplace safety protocols and OSHA guidelines
  • Communicate effectively with drivers, dispatch, and management regarding vehicle status
  • Respond to road calls or emergency breakdowns when required
