Salary: $25.00/hr

We are seeking a dependable and experienced On-Call Fiber Technician to support our network operations in San Angelo, TX and the surrounding Concho Valley region. This position is activated on an as-needed basis to respond to outages, service disruptions, and overflow installation work. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, available on short notice, and capable of working independently in the field with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to on-call dispatch requests for fiber outages, service interruptions, and emergency repairs
  • Troubleshoot, locate, and repair damaged or degraded fiber optic cable in aerial, buried, and conduit environments
  • Perform fusion splicing, OTDR testing, and power meter testing to restore and verify service
  • Install and terminate fiber at customer premises, splice enclosures, and distribution points as dispatched
  • Complete accurate field documentation including splice records, as-built notes, and service tickets for each job
  • Coordinate with the NOC (Network Operations Center) and dispatch team for prioritization and updates
  • Follow all safety protocols including OSHA standards, traffic control, and company policies
  • Locate underground utilities via 811 procedures prior to any excavation work
  • Perform work in varied outdoor West Texas conditions including extreme heat, wind, and occasional cold

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical/vocational training in telecommunications preferred
  • 1–3 years of hands-on fiber optic splicing, installation, or outside plant experience
  • Proficiency with OTDR equipment
  • Valid Texas driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to work irregular hours including nights, weekends, and holidays as dispatched
  • Must be reachable and able to respond to call-outs within an agreed-upon timeframe
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb poles and ladders, and work outdoors for extended periods

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with GPON/FTTx equipment (Calix, Nokia, or similar)
  • Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) through the Fiber Optic Association (FOA)
  • Knowledge of OSP outside plant construction and rural fiber deployment
  • Experience working in West Texas terrain and conditions
  • Familiarity with GIS mapping or network management software

Work Environment & Schedule

  • This is an on-call, as-needed position — hours are not guaranteed and vary based on network needs
  • Dispatched on short notice for outages, repairs, and project overflow
  • Must be available for nights, weekends, and holiday call-outs
  • Primary coverage area: San Angelo, TX and surrounding Concho Valley communities
  • Occasional travel to neighboring counties may be required
