Fleet Maintenance Assistant

Position Overview
We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Fleet Maintenance Assistant to support the maintenance, compliance, and operational readiness of our fleet vehicles and equipment. This role is a mix of hands-on preventative maintenance and administrative/documentation responsibilities.
The position is approximately:
- 40% preventative maintenance & repair
- 60% documentation, compliance, and inventory management
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong heavy equipment or fleet maintenance experience who understands DOT compliance and enjoys both field service work and organized documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Maintenance & Repair
- Assist with preventative maintenance and repairs on fleet vehicles and equipment
- Perform inspections on fluids, belts, hoses, tires, lights, fittings, and safety equipment
- Support maintenance of pumps, vacuum systems, PTOs, tanks, hoses, and related components
- Respond to breakdowns and perform roadside repairs as needed
- Travel to repair locations using a company vehicle (service calls may range from 20 minutes to 3 hours)
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate electronic maintenance and inspection records
- Manage DOT compliance documentation and regulatory records
- Assist with inventory tracking and parts management
- Ensure fleet maintenance records are current and audit-ready
- Coordinate with vendors, mechanics, and suppliers regarding repairs and parts procurement
Qualifications
- Heavy equipment, fleet, or mechanical repair experience required
- DOT compliance awareness strongly preferred
- Hydrovac experience is a plus, but not required
- Strong organizational and documentation skills
- Comfortable using technology-based fleet management systems
- Ability to work independently and respond to field service needs
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license required
- CDL is preferred but not required
- Must meet company driving standards and pass motor vehicle record check
- Must pass criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen
- High school diploma or GED required
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 80 lbs regularly
- Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, and overhead lifting
- Ability to work in shop environments and varying weather conditions
- Comfortable working around heavy equipment and moving vehicles
Schedule & Work Environment
- Full-time position (40+ hours/week)
- Standard schedule: Tuesday through Saturday
- Evening work and occasional on-call response may be required
- Overtime available with supervisor approval
