Wastewater Facility Supervisor 

Position Summary

The Wastewater Facility Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, compliance, and personnel activities of a wastewater treatment facility. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant treatment of wastewater in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. The supervisor manages plant staff, monitors system performance, coordinates maintenance activities, and supports continuous improvement initiatives.


Key Responsibilities

Operations Management

  • Supervise daily wastewater treatment plant operations and ensure continuous, efficient processing.
  • Monitor treatment systems, pumps, motors, SCADA systems, and related equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with operating permits, environmental standards, and safety regulations.
  • Review operational data, laboratory reports, and process control information to optimize plant performance.
  • Respond to operational emergencies, alarms, equipment failures, and system upsets.

Staff Supervision

  • Schedule, direct, and evaluate plant operators, maintenance personnel, and support staff.
  • Provide coaching, training, and professional development opportunities.
  • Ensure staff follow proper safety procedures and standard operating practices.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and participate in hiring and disciplinary processes.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with all applicable EPA, state environmental agency, OSHA, and local regulations.
  • Prepare and review operational reports, compliance documentation, and regulatory submissions.
  • Coordinate inspections and interact with regulatory agencies as needed.
  • Ensure accurate recordkeeping of plant operations, maintenance, and laboratory testing.

Maintenance & Asset Management

  • Coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance activities for plant equipment and infrastructure.
  • Work closely with maintenance teams and contractors to ensure timely repairs.
  • Assist in planning capital improvement projects and equipment upgrades.
  • Monitor inventory levels for chemicals, tools, parts, and operational supplies.

Safety & Environmental Stewardship

  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with workplace safety standards.
  • Conduct safety meetings, training sessions, and incident investigations.
  • Ensure proper handling and storage of chemicals and hazardous materials.
  • Support sustainability and environmental protection initiatives.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Water/Wastewater Technology, or a related field preferred.

Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in wastewater treatment operations.
  • Previous supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience with industrial and/or municipal wastewater systems preferred.

Certifications

  • Valid state Wastewater Operator Certification (Class level as required by facility).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • OSHA or safety-related certifications are a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, laboratory procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and operational data.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and operational reporting software.

Working Conditions

  • Work performed in both office and industrial plant environments.
  • Exposure to chemicals, odors, noise, and varying weather conditions.
  • May require on-call availability, overtime, weekends, and emergency response duties.
  • Ability to lift equipment and work in confined spaces or elevated areas as needed.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, and perform physical inspections throughout the facility.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
