Position Overview

A specialized outdoor testing and engineering facility is seeking a hands-on Equipment Engineer to support the design, maintenance, optimization, and continuous improvement of complex electro-mechanical systems used in environmental and weather exposure testing.

This is a highly technical, mechanically focused role ideal for an engineer who enjoys working directly with equipment in the field. The Equipment Engineer will serve as the primary engineering resource onsite, partnering closely with maintenance technicians and site leadership to ensure reliability, performance, and continuous improvement of testing systems.

The facility conducts accelerated environmental exposure testing on materials such as roofing, paint, automotive components, and other industrial products. Equipment includes large outdoor motor-driven systems that track the sun, along with instrumentation and control systems used to simulate and measure environmental conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and upgrade outdoor electro-mechanical testing equipment
  • Support motor-driven sun-tracking systems, PLCs, and data acquisition systems
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical equipment issues in the field
  • Implement engineering improvements to enhance system performance, reliability, and usability
  • Collaborate with maintenance technicians on repairs, upgrades, and preventative maintenance
  • Review and interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical documentation
  • Develop and maintain technical procedures, records, and system documentation
  • Support engineering projects related to equipment optimization and upgrades
  • Assist with calibration activities for testing and measurement equipment
  • Provide technical support to operations and serve as a key engineering resource for the site
  • Support site operations when leadership is unavailable
  • Work extensively outdoors in desert testing conditions

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or equivalent hands-on experience
  • 5–10+ years of experience in a hands-on mechanical/electrical engineering environment
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with experience maintaining and improving complex electro-mechanical systems
  • Solid understanding of industrial control systems, including:
    • PLCs
    • Motors
    • Relays
    • Switches
    • Timers
    • Electrical control and protection systems
  • Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems independently
  • Comfortable working in a small, highly technical team environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, or similar)
  • PLC programming experience
  • Background in equipment maintenance, optimization, or preventive maintenance
  • Experience with structural or mechanical design (frameworks, weldments, sheet metal)
  • Familiarity with industrial testing, manufacturing, or lab environments
  • Experience with rotating mechanical systems or outdoor industrial equipment

Work Environment

  • Small facility with approximately 15–20 total employees
  • No dedicated engineering department—this role is the primary engineering presence onsite
  • Heavy hands-on field work in outdoor testing conditions
  • Combination of mechanical, electrical, and controls-focused responsibilities
  • No travel required

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $80,000 – $90,000 annually
  • $5,000 sign-on bonus
  • Bonus eligibility
  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Collaborative, hands-on work environment

Interview Process

  • Initial interview with Site Manager (onsite or virtual)
  • Virtual interview with Director of Manufacturing
  • Final panel interview with executive leadership (three-person panel)

Additional Notes

  • Urgent hiring need with fast turnaround expectations
  • Candidate feedback typically within 24–48 hours
  • Background check required
