Estimator – Fabrication

Location: Indianapolis, Indiana
Compensation: $70,000-$80,000+ based upon experience + PTO, Paid Holidays, 401(k), Health, Vision & Dental

Role Overview

The Estimator is responsible for developing accurate cost estimates and project timelines for custom fabrication projects based on architectural and mechanical drawings. This role supports a busy fabrication shop and works directly with customers, contractors, and internal teams to ensure competitive, detailed, and well-documented bids.

This position is hands-on and detail-oriented, requiring the ability to interpret construction documents, evaluate fabrication methods, source materials, and collaborate closely with shop craftsmen and management. Projects span manufacturing, industrial, construction, and architectural applications in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities

Estimating & Project Analysis

• Review and analyze drawings, specifications, procedures, and project documentation to fully understand scope and customer requirements
• Prepare detailed material and labor cost estimates for fabrication methods including lasers, waterjets, press brakes, CNC machining, and welding
• Determine key construction and fabrication factors that influence overall project cost
• Develop accurate, timely estimates and project timelines to support bid deadlines

Vendor Coordination & Cost Documentation

• Source, price, and integrate vendor and non-metal components such as lighting, wood, plastics, and equipment
• Gather, organize, and maintain bid documentation and historical material pricing across multiple vendors
• Ensure estimates reflect current market pricing and realistic production assumptions

Collaboration & Communication

• Communicate directly with contractors, owners, designers, and other stakeholders to clarify scope and requirements
• Collaborate with shop craftsmen to evaluate fabrication processes, manufacturing efficiencies, and improvement opportunities
• Work with management to improve estimating accuracy, design processes, and operational efficiency
• Participate in occasional site visits for field measurements, client meetings, or construction coordination

Qualifications & Experience

• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, blueprints, and specifications
• Strong understanding of commercial construction and fabrication processes
• Experience preparing material and labor cost estimates
• Strong time-management skills with the ability to multitask and meet bid deadlines
• Excellent communication skills, both internal and client-facing
• Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving and analytical ability
• Mechanical aptitude preferred
• Familiarity with plan rooms, CAD, or 3D modeling is a plus
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
