Express Employment Professionals Guelph is hiring on behalf of a reputable company in Stratford, ON for Welding Supervisors.
The Welding Supervisor is responsible for leading and developing the skill sets of 30–40 team members in the assigned weld department through training programs and hands-on guidance.
Key Responsibilities
· Supervise and coordinate daily welding activities to meet production schedules and delivery timelines.
· Assign work, monitor progress, and adjust resources to meet changing priorities.
· Ensure proper use of welding procedures (WPS) and adherence to blueprints and specifications.
· Troubleshoot production issues and implement corrective actions.
· Ensure all welding meets required quality standards and codes (CWB, AWS, ASME, etc.).
· Collaborate with the Quality team on inspections, audits, and non-conformance resolution.
· Maintain proper documentation (WPS, PQRs, weld logs, inspection reports).
· Support ISO 9001 compliance and continuous improvement initiatives.
· Promote and enforce a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with company policies and applicable regulations.
· Conduct safety talks, hazard assessments, and incident investigations.
· Ensure proper use of PPE and safe operation of welding and auxiliary equipment.
· Supervise, coach, and develop welders, apprentices, and fitters.
· Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing feedback, including disciplinary action when required.
· Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize workflows.
· Work with Engineering on process improvements and new production launches.
· Plan, organize, and control production work, including timely equipment setup.
· Communicate with other departments to address issues such as inventory shortages, short lead times, or incomplete work instructions.
· Maintain overall responsibility for quality, productivity, delivery performance, and customer satisfaction.
· Support staffing activities, including job descriptions, hiring decisions, and resource allocation.
· Monitor staffing levels and adjust labor allocation as needed.
· Oversee staff scheduling, including work assignments, rotations, training, vacations, overtime, and shift coverage.
· Support continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., on-time delivery, Lean manufacturing, health & safety, quality, 5S).
· Assist staff in resolving complex operational issues and improving productivity and product quality.
· Ensure compliance with company policies and implement progressive discipline with HR support when necessary.
· Conduct interviews, performance appraisals, and employee onboarding, and maintain skills matrices.
· Review and manage the time and attendance system daily (attendance, sick leave, vacation).
· Measure piece parts and weldments (in-process and final assemblies) as required.
· Maintain documentation of measurements, material test reports, and inspection reports (e.g., ISRs, FAIs).
Educational Requirements
· 5+ years of welding experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
· 2+ years of supervisory or lead-hand experience.
· Strong knowledge of welding processes (MIG, TIG, FCAW, SMAW).
· Familiarity with CWB certification requirements (or AWS/ASME equivalents).
· Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
· Experience in ISO 9001 environments is an asset.
· Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
· High school diploma and/or post-secondary education, or equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience.
Requirements
· Demonstrated leadership skills and business acumen.
· Broad manufacturing experience in a metal fabrication environment.
· Knowledge of production processes, inspection procedures, planning and control, and budgeting.
· Proficiency in MS Office and MRP/ERP systems.
· Ability to lead a diverse team effectively.
· Strong verbal and written communication and conflict-resolution skills.
· Knowledge of health and safety systems.
· Strong understanding of manufacturing systems.
· Ability to drive employee engagement and team-oriented operations.
· Ability to read and interpret engineering schematics and detailed blueprints.
· Experience with Lean manufacturing principles.
· Strong situational awareness.
