Position Summary

The Structural Steel Fitter is responsible for reading shop drawings, laying out structural steel components, fitting and aligning parts, and preparing assemblies for welding according to company quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

· Read and interpret structural steel shop drawings, blueprints, and work orders.

· Lay out, measure, mark, and fit beams, columns, plates, angles, channels, and other steel components.

· Assemble and tack-weld parts in correct position for final welding.

· Verify dimensions, squareness, alignment, hole locations, and tolerances.

· Operate hand tools, power tools, grinders, torches, magnetic drills, and other fabrication equipment.

· Use measuring devices such as tape measures, squares, levels, and various layout tools.

· Assist with flame/plasma cutting, beveling, coping, and material preparation.

· Work closely with welders, machine operators, and supervisors to maintain workflow.

· Inspect completed fit-up before release to welding or finishing.

· Maintain a clean and safe work area and follow all shop safety procedures.

Qualifications

· High school diploma or GED preferred.

· Experience in structural steel fitting, fabrication, or related industrial work preferred.

· Ability to read and understand shop drawings and fabrication details.

· Strong math and measurement skills, including fractions and decimals.

· Ability to use fitting and layout tools accurately.

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Physical Requirements

· Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift throughout the shift.

· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly; heavier lifting with assistance or equipment.

· Ability to work in a shop environment with noise, dust, heat, and moving equipment.

· Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, and steel-toe boots.

Preferred Skills

· Experience with oxy-fuel cutting and basic tack welding.

· Familiarity with production schedules and shop workflow.

· Overhead crane experience is a plus
