Job Title: Traffic Flagger

Job Summary

A Traffic Flagger is responsible for safely directing vehicular and pedestrian traffic through construction zones, maintenance areas, or roadwork sites using a hand-held stop/slow paddle, hand signals, and verbal communication as needed. The Traffic Flagger plays a critical role in maintaining the safety of workers, motorists, and the general public by controlling traffic flow in accordance with traffic control plans and safety regulations.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Control traffic flow using a stop/slow paddle, hand signals, and approved traffic control devices.
  • Stand at assigned locations along roadways for extended periods to direct vehicles safely through work zones.
  • Coordinate traffic movement with other flaggers and work crew members using hand signals or two-way radios.
  • Remain alert to changing traffic conditions and adjust signaling as needed to prevent accidents.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety procedures, company policies, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with motorists, pedestrians, and crew members.
  • Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control equipment such as cones, barrels, warning signs, and barricades.
  • Report unsafe conditions, incidents, or near-misses to supervisors immediately.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and wind.
  • Requires standing, walking, and remaining alert for long periods of time, often on busy roadways.
  • Exposure to traffic noise, vehicle exhaust, dust, and construction-related hazards.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods (often several hours at a time).
  • Ability to lift and carry traffic control devices (typically up to 50 pounds).
  • Ability to see and hear approaching traffic clearly.
  • Frequent use of arms and hands to position and hold signaling devices.

Qualifications

  • No prior experience required; on-the-job training typically provided.
  • Knowledge of traffic control principles and safety practices is preferred.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Strong attention to safety and situational awareness.
  • Must successfully complete any required traffic flagger safety training or certification as required by law or employer.

Education and Certification

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred but not required.
  • Valid traffic flagger certification may be required depending on state or local regulations.
