POSITION OVERVIEW

 

The Shipping & Receiving Lead is responsible for leading and overseeing the full scope of inbound and outbound logistics operations within our facility. This role leads our Shipping & Receiving Associates and serves as the primary point of accountability for the accurate, efficient, and compliant movement, storage, and documentation of all goods. Working closely with internal departments, outside vendors, and carriers, the Manager ensures that all shipping and receiving activities meet the highest standards for safety, accuracy, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate is a hands-on leader who thrives in a fast-paced environment and brings both operational expertise and strong people management skills to the role.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead Shipping & Receiving Associates; provide daily direction, set priorities, and ensure all work is completed accurately and on schedule.
  • Recruit, onboard, and train Associates; oversee completion of all mandatory training within probationary periods and ensure ongoing skill development.
  • Conduct performance evaluations; coach Associates toward permanent employment transitions and career growth based on performance.
  • Build a collaborative, accountable team culture that works effectively across internal departments, vendors, and carriers.

Outbound Shipping Oversight

  • Oversee the pulling, preparation, and dispatch of all outbound shipments; ensure orders are fulfilled accurately per specifications before departure.
  • Verify and approve all outbound shipping documentation and coordinate carrier arrangements to meet delivery commitments.
  • Monitor shipments through to final destination; serve as the escalation point to resolve transit issues, discrepancies, or carrier disputes.

Inbound Receiving Oversight

  • Oversee the inspection, verification, and documentation of all incoming shipments against purchase orders; ensure discrepancies, shortages, and damages are reported and resolved promptly.
  • Coordinate with internal departments to ensure received goods are routed, stored, and documented appropriately and without delay.
  • Manage vendor and carrier relationships; communicate professionally to resolve receiving issues and maintain strong partnerships.

Inventory & Facility Management

  • Maintain and oversee inventory accuracy through proper documentation, recordkeeping, and regular cycle counts; investigate and resolve variances.
  • Ensure proper organization and storage of goods in designated facility locations; enforce labeling and placement standards across the team.
  • Ensure safe operation of forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks; maintain current certifications for all equipment operators on the team.
  • Track and report key metrics including shipment accuracy, inventory variances, and receiving turnaround times; present findings to senior leadership.

Safety & Compliance

  • Champion a safety-first culture; enforce all safety protocols, PPE requirements, and industry standards across all shipping and receiving operations.
  • Oversee compliance with chemical handling protocols and ensure all regulated materials are transported and documented in accordance with applicable safety regulations.
  • Ensure all mandatory documentation for regulated materials is completed, maintained, and audit-ready at all times.
  • Conduct regular safety observations and facility walk-throughs; identify and address hazards proactively to maintain a safe indoor and outdoor work environment.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • 3–5+ years of experience in shipping, receiving, warehousing, or logistics operations, with at least 1–2 years in a supervisory or lead capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and develop a team in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.
  • Strong communication, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with shipping documentation, purchase order verification, and regulated materials compliance.
  • Forklift certification required or ability to obtain; proficient with pallet jacks and hand trucks.
  • Able to work effectively both indoors and outdoors; ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently while managing a team and collaborating across departments.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills; experience with inventory management systems or logistics software a plus.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree or coursework in logistics, supply chain, or operations management preferred.
