POSITION SUMMARY

The Utility Worker plays a vital support role within the Food Services Department. This position is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary kitchen environment across day and evening shifts. The Utility Worker ensures that all dishwashing, sanitation, storage, and general kitchen support tasks are completed efficiently and in full compliance with hospital food safety and health standards. This role requires a dependable team player who takes pride in a clean workspace and contributes to the smooth operation of the department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Dishwashing and Sanitation

  Wash dishes, glassware, flatware, pots, and pans using commercial dishwashers and by hand, ensuring all items are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized to health department and hospital standards.

  Maintain the cleanliness of the dishwashing area, including all equipment and work surfaces, at all times.

  Clean and sanitize storage areas including freezers and refrigerators, as well as kitchen appliances and equipment throughout each shift.

  Report any malfunctions, damage, or maintenance issues with dishwashers or other equipment to the supervisor promptly.

Dish Handling and Storage

  Load and unload dishwashers efficiently to maintain a steady flow of clean items throughout the shift.

  Sort and stack clean dishes, glassware, and utensils; place all items in designated storage areas in an organized manner.

  Assist with stocking supplies at serving stations and in cupboards as directed by the supervisor.

General Kitchen Support

  Sweep and mop kitchen floors regularly to maintain a clean, hazard-free environment throughout the shift.

  Remove trash and clean garbage containers as needed throughout the day and evening.

  Assist with kitchen prep work as needed, including chopping vegetables or preparing sauces under the direction of kitchen staff.

  Receive and handle food deliveries; store food items properly according to food safety guidelines.

  Assist with closing duties including sanitizing cooking stations and food prep surfaces at the end of each shift.

  Maintain a clean, organized workspace at all times; adhere to all food safety, sanitation, and hospital safety guidelines without exception.

  Work collaboratively as part of the Food Services team; communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers to ensure smooth shift operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

  Prior experience in a kitchen, food service, or dishwashing role preferred; willingness to learn required.

  Knowledge of or ability to learn food safety, sanitation, and hygiene standards (ServSafe certification a plus).

  Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. for extended periods during a shift.

  Dependable, punctual, and able to work both day and evening shifts including weekends and holidays as required.

  Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining cleanliness and safety standards in a healthcare environment.

  Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow instructions from supervisors.

  High school diploma or GED preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position works in a hospital kitchen and food service environment. The role involves exposure to hot equipment, wet surfaces, cleaning chemicals, and varying noise levels. Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including non-slip footwear, gloves, and aprons is required at all times. Shifts are available during day and evening hours.
