Position Summary

The Shelter Monitor is responsible for maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for shelter residents. This position monitors daily shelter activities, enforces shelter policies, ensures the safety of residents and staff, and provides basic support and assistance to individuals experiencing homelessness. The Shelter Monitor must maintain strict confidentiality regarding all resident information.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor shelter facilities and resident activities to ensure a safe and orderly environment.

  • Enforce shelter rules, policies, and curfews in a fair and respectful manner.

  • Conduct regular facility rounds and ensure security procedures are followed.

  • Perform resident check-ins, room assignments, and bed tracking as required.

  • Respond to emergencies, conflicts, or incidents and report them according to shelter protocols.

  • Complete incident reports, shift logs, and required documentation accurately and timely.

  • Provide general information, guidance, and support to shelter residents.

  • Coordinate with case managers, supervisors, and other staff to address resident needs.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of common areas as needed.

  • Assist with meal service or distribution of basic supplies when required.

Confidentiality Requirement

The Shelter Monitor must maintain strict confidentiality regarding all residents, staff, and shelter operations. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Personal identifying information of residents

  • Medical, mental health, or case management information

  • Shelter records, reports, or internal communications

  • Any sensitive situations involving residents or staff

Confidential information may only be shared with authorized staff and only for legitimate program or safety purposes. Breach of confidentiality may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, crisis situations, or in social services preferred

  • Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations

  • Strong observation and communication skills

  • Ability to enforce rules while maintaining respect and compassion

  • Basic computer and documentation skills

  • Ability to work evenings, nights, weekends, or holidays as required
