Manual Metal Bandsaw Operator – Job Description

Position Summary
The Manual Metal Bandsaw Operator is responsible for safely and accurately cutting metal materials to specified lengths and tolerances using a manual bandsaw. This role requires strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and adherence to production and safety standards.


Key Responsibilities

  • Operate a manual metal bandsaw to cut a variety of metals (steel, aluminum, alloys, etc.) according to work orders.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, cut lists, and technical drawings to determine material dimensions and cutting requirements.
  • Measure and mark raw materials using tape measures, squares, and other tools to ensure precise cuts.
  • Load and secure material into the saw vice or fixtures safely and properly.
  • Monitor cutting process, making adjustments for blade speed, feed rate, or alignment when necessary.
  • Inspect finished cuts to verify accuracy, quality, and conformance to specifications.
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance, such as blade changes, lubrication, and cleaning.
  • Follow all safety guidelines, including lockout/tagout, PPE requirements, and proper material handling.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area to ensure a safe and efficient workspace.
  • Communicate issues such as blade wear, equipment malfunctions, or material defects to supervisors.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience operating manual or semi-automatic metal-cutting bandsaws (preferred but not always required).
  • Ability to read and understand technical drawings, blueprints, and measurement tools.
  • Strong math skills, including basic fractions and decimals.
  • Knowledge of metal types and cutting characteristics is a plus.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy materials safely.
  • Good hand–eye coordination and mechanical aptitude.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety.

Physical Requirements

  • Standing for extended periods.
  • Lifting metal stock up to required weight limits (often 50–75 lbs).
  • Working in environments with noise, metal chips, lubricants, and industrial machinery.

Work Environment

  • Fabrication shops, machine shops, manufacturing facilities, warehouses, or metal supply operations.
  • Often includes working around other cutting, welding, or machining operations
