Job Title: Core Drilling Operator / Driller

Company Overview

MWT operates four core drilling rigs for the Warrior MetCoal Mines in West and Central Alabama. Our rigs drill more than 1,000 feet to obtain coal core samples, helping Warrior MetCoal plan future mining operations. Each rig is staffed by a Core Drilling Operator (Driller) and at least one Core Drilling Assistant.

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled Core Drilling Operator/Driller to join our team. This role requires a mechanically inclined, safety-conscious individual who can operate core drilling rigs, oversee rig maintenance, and provide direction to support staff. The Core Drilling Operator reports to the Core Drilling Superintendent (currently Robert “Bob” Roach) and plays a critical role in ensuring safe, efficient, and accurate drilling operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Operate core drilling rigs to extract coal core samples, including tripping drill stems and handling core samples

• Provide daily direction and supervision for the Core Drilling Assistant

• Perform routine maintenance on rigs and support equipment

• Ensure equipment is prepared for cold weather conditions at shift end

• Follow MWT and MSHA safety guidelines and ensure crew compliance

• Assess situations and provide guidance, sometimes with minimal supervision

• Tighten/loosen drill pipes and core bits as needed

• Operate trucks, forklifts, and other lifting equipment; apply rigging experience when required

• Work outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain)

• Occasionally perform welding, torching, or cutting tasks as needed

Qualifications

• Mechanically inclined with strong problem-solving skills

• Class B CDL preferred; clean driving record required (current AL driver’s license required)

• Previous experience with core rig operations and drilling equipment

• Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and climb ladders or move on/off trucks and trailers

• Familiarity with forklifts, rigging, and related equipment

• Willingness to work extended hours (day shift primarily, but long days exceeding 12 hours or night shifts may be required)

Compensation

• Starting rate: $25/hr (negotiable based on experience and qualifications)
