Salary: $28-$30/hr DOE

Express Employment is recruiting for a Payroll Specialist that will prepare, process, and maintain the payroll for a large organization in Grand Junction. This an evaluation hire position. If hired by the organization permanently, full benefits package will be offered.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• Process monthly payroll, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
• Review timesheets for completeness, proper authorization, coding, and compliance with policies.
• Calculate and enter wages, overtime, differentials, shift premiums, stipends, and other earnings.
• Verify and process payroll deductions such as taxes, retirement contributions, garnishments, and benefit premiums.
• Maintain accurate payroll records, including employee pay histories, adjustments, corrections, and audit documentation.
• Respond to employee payroll inquiries and assist employees with forms, withholding changes, and payroll procedures.
• Reconcile payroll reports and assist with year‑end activities, including W‑2 processing.
• Ensure compliance with FLSA, IRS regulations, Social Security Administration requirements, state labor laws, and organizational procedures.
• Coordinate with HR regarding new hires, terminations, status changes, and leave usage.
• Prepare and distribute payroll reports for internal departments and external agencies as required.
• Assist with internal and external payroll audits.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Three (3) years of payroll, accounting, or bookkeeping experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of payroll principles, accounting practices, and applicable employment laws.
• Proficiency with payroll software, timekeeping systems (especially Excel and Workday).
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.
• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality in handling sensitive data.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed in a standard office environment.
• Requires extended periods of sitting, computer use, and data entry.
• May occasionally require lifting files or office materials up to 20 pounds.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as typing and data entry.
• Ability to view computer screens for extended periods.
• Clear verbal and written communication.
