Typical Job Description – Class A CDL Driver (Building Materials)

A Class A CDL Driver in a building materials environment is responsible for safely transporting construction and building material products from the distribution yard to customer job sites, ensuring deliveries are made on time and handled professionally.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Safely operate a Class A commercial vehicle (tractor-trailer/flatbed) in compliance with all federal, state, and company safety guidelines.

• Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle and report defects immediately.

• Deliver building materials (lumber, roofing supplies, concrete, etc.) to residential or commercial job sites on schedule.

• Load and unload materials and ensure proper securing/protection of loads prior to transport.

• Provide excellent customer service, obtain signatures when required, and resolve delivery questions professionally.

• Maintain accurate delivery records and logs (paper or electronic).

• Adhere to all DOT regulations including hours-of-service rules.

• Maintain cleanliness and general care of the assigned vehicle.

License & Compliance

• Must possess a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A.

• Must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) physical/medical requirements (DOT medical card).

• Must have a clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) with no recent serious violations.

• Ability to comply with DOT logbook and hours-of-service rules.

Experience

• Typically 1+ years of commercial driving experience preferred.

• Experience with flatbeds, trailers, and building materials delivery is often preferred.

Skills & Abilities

• Strong navigation and route planning skills.

• Good written and verbal communication skills for interacting with customers and dispatch.

• Ability to use GPS, ELD (electronic logging device), and other delivery technology.

• Excellent time management and safety orientation.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift heavy materials (often up to 75+ lbs).

• Frequent entry and exit from vehicles and delivery sites.

• Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
