Do you want to innovate at the ingredient level while ensuring food safety, quality, and regulatory excellence?
Express Employment Professionals is recruiting for an experienced FSQA & R&D professional to support new product development while ensuring all products are safe, compliant, and produced to the highest quality standards within a Canadian food manufacturing environment.
This is a dual-function leadership role combining Food Safety & Quality Assurance (FSQA) with Research & Development (R&D) in a food ingredient and food technology manufacturing environment. Rather than finished consumer goods, this role focuses on ingredient systems, blends, casings, and food processing inputs used by downstream manufacturers.
You will play a key role in developing, validating, and scaling ingredient formulations, while ensuring food safety programs, quality systems, and regulatory compliance are embedded from concept through commercialization.
This role is ideal for a Food Scientist or ingredient-side R&D professional who also has strong FSQA expertise and enjoys working cross-functionally with operations.
Key Responsibilities
Research & Development (R&D) – Ingredient Innovation
- Lead new ingredient and formulation development from concept through pilot trials and commercialization
- Develop and optimize custom ingredient blends, formulations, and processing solutions
- Support pilot-scale testing and validation of formulations prior to full-scale production
- Partner with operations to ensure formulations are scalable, repeatable, and safely produced
- Improve and refine existing ingredient formulations based on customer, operational, or regulatory needs
- Support technical problem-solving related to ingredient functionality, shelf life, and processing performance
Food Safety & Quality Assurance (FSQA)
- Ensure compliance with Canadian food safety and regulatory requirements, including CFIA and SFCR
- Maintain and improve food safety and quality systems aligned with GFSI standards (SQF, BRCGS, or FSSC 22000)
- Develop, review, and maintain raw material, ingredient, and process specifications
- Ensure HACCP programs are effective, current, and properly implemented
- Support USDA and FDA requirements for ingredients manufactured for export to the United States
- Lead internal and external audits, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Act as a technical resource on food safety, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance for ingredient manufacturing
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science or a related field (Food Technology, Chemistry, Microbiology)
- 5+ years of experience in a food ingredient, food processing, or food manufacturing environment
- Hands-on experience across both R&D / formulation and FSQA / regulatory compliance
- Strong knowledge of CFIA, Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR), HACCP, and GFSI standards
- Experience developing and scaling food ingredients or formulations from pilot to production
- Strong technical documentation and specification development skills
- Comfortable working cross-functionally with operations, procurement, and leadership
- Background in ingredient blending, food processing inputs, or food technology solutions is a strong asset
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $85,000–$100,000, depending on experience
- Comprehensive benefits package
- Opportunity to influence ingredient innovation while shaping food safety and quality systems in a growing food technology environment
