This position REQUIRES hands-on experience with anhydrous ammonia refrigeration systems. Candidates without ammonia experience will NOT be considered.

About the Role

The Refrigeration Operating Engineer is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing industrial refrigeration systems used to freeze and chill product while maintaining required temperatures throughout the facility.

This is a critical plant operations role involving the safe operation and oversight of an anhydrous ammonia refrigeration system containing approximately 50,000 pounds of ammonia.

The ideal candidate is dependable, safety-focused, and team-oriented, with excellent attendance and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor, operate, and adjust industrial refrigeration systems
• Safely operate and oversee large-scale anhydrous ammonia systems
• Evaluate product temperatures and adjust system controls as needed
• Maintain and repair refrigeration, boiler, compressor, and auxiliary equipment
• Communicate effectively with production and maintenance teams
• Maintain accurate logs and operational records
• Support or backfill supervisory duties as needed
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area

Schedule & Operations

• Facility operates 3 shifts: Days, Swing, and Graveyard
• Operations run 7 days per week
• Extended or consecutive workdays may be required during processing season (July–November)
• Maintenance primarily supports day and swing shifts; flexibility required

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• Refrigeration, mechanical, or technical training preferred
• Direct experience operating and maintaining anhydrous ammonia refrigeration systems is required
• Strong mechanical aptitude
• Ability to work independently
• Reliable attendance and strong safety mindset
• Positive, team-first attitude
