Product Development Engineer – Location: Bend, OR
One of the region’s most innovative and rapidly growing companies is seeking a Product Development Engineer to join their team!
What You Get to Do!
The Product Development Engineer is responsible for designing and supporting product concepts that can be utilized across multiple finished product formulations used by customers worldwide. This role transforms product functional requirements into detailed component specifications, defines test methods, and manages suppliers who produce outsourced components.
You will support the full product lifecycle, from concept sketch to high‑volume commercial production, partnering with Sales, Field Service, Regulatory, Sourcing, and Manufacturing teams.
Product Design
- Partner early with marketing teams to identify design elements that are new, unique, or challenging, ensuring feasibility through all verification and validation cycles.
- Understand functional requirements and develop quantifiable functional specifications.
- Translate functional specifications into detailed components and material requirements.
- Develop test criteria for evaluating final product quality in manufacturing.
- Drive DfX activities to achieve product targets for manufacturability, scale, quality, reliability, safety, and cost.
- Communicate technical challenges, solution paths, and data‑driven recommendations clearly to peers and leadership.
- Perform technical analyses, design experiments, and characterize process/design interactions.
Supplier Evaluation & Qualification
- Identify candidate suppliers for materials and components.
- Assess supplier technical capabilities to inform sourcing decisions.
- Support the qualification of new suppliers through site visits and quality assessments.
New Product Launch
- Develop trials to demonstrate production process capability for new products.
- Analyze trial data, identify issues, and recommend improvements.
- Define material specifications, SOPs, and process parameters aligned with safety, quality, delivery, and cost metrics.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams and external vendors to develop and scale manufacturing processes that support unique and emerging product technologies.
What You Will Bring…
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering.
- 3–5 years of experience in product development or manufacturing engineering.
- Strong problem‑solving capabilities with an ability to balance risk, resources, and deadlines.
- Experience working cross‑functionally in concurrent engineering environments.
- Proficiency in CAD/CAM software (SolidWorks or Autodesk Fusion 360 preferred).
- Experience with analytical tools such as Finite Element Analysis.
- Knowledge of process characterization tools (SPC, DOE) and analytical software (JMP, Minitab).
- Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Enthusiasm for teamwork across multiple levels and departments.
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally to supplier and manufacturing sites as needed.
