STRUCTURAL DEPARTMENT MANAGER

This role ensures consistent communication throughout the internal design process, supports growth opportunities for team members, and defines the impact this team has on the company as a whole. Team members in this position are expected to be Team Focused and Design Driven.

We are an integrated provider of planning, architecture, interior design, engineering, facilities management, and construction services. Our professional staff has a diverse project portfolio including industrial, corporate, institutional, and government facilities.

Our Team Focused – Design Driven solutions are delivered under the direction of experienced project managers who guide clients from the initial stages of planning through design, construction, and occupancy. Additional in-house services include HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, technology, structural, civil, geo-environmental, and landscape design.


Objective

The Structural Department Manager is responsible for leading the Structural team by coordinating daily operations of highly skilled engineering staff while directing and overseeing the production and coordination of structural deliverables. This role provides strong structural expertise to all design team members.


Responsibilities

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Recruit, interview, hire, and train new staff as needed
  • Provide top-level management for all design and engineering teams
  • Oversee the daily workflow of the department
  • Provide staff training to advance individual professional development goals
  • Ensure company policies and procedures are followed by all team members
  • Address and document discipline issues in a timely manner
  • Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations
  • Document staff trainings, departmental meetings, outside seminars, webcasts, and vendor presentations
  • Demonstrate the company’s core values with both internal team members and external clients
  • Maintain positive client feedback at all times

Other Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate engineering functions including quality assurance, testing, production, and research and development of design criteria
  • Facilitate communication among clients and team members to ensure specifications, budgets, and deadlines are clearly understood
  • Serve as Project Manager for multiple projects, including:
    • Creating timelines and cost projections
    • Organizing collaborative meetings
    • Ensuring compliance with specifications, schedules, and budgets
    • Keeping design change orders due to errors and omissions below 2%
  • Assess potential projects for feasibility by analyzing technology, design requirements, regulations, and market demand
  • Prepare and present design proposals to clients according to deadlines
  • Review, coordinate, and oversee all technical activities related to engineering projects
  • Direct design teams, review drafts and models, and approve design changes
  • Report scope changes immediately and issue change orders to clients or consultants
  • Communicate directly with project managers, production staff, marketing personnel, and clients from conceptual design through construction
  • Provide weekly project status updates to clients
  • Ensure project checklists are updated, completed, distributed, and reviewed
  • Distribute meeting minutes within 48 hours
  • Ensure department profitability with a minimum project margin of 10%
  • Run and analyze reports from financial software
  • Monitor accounts receivable and follow up on delinquent accounts; no A/R to exceed 120 days
  • Review and approve invoices per accounting guidelines each billing cycle
  • Establish, implement, and maintain administrative policies, procedures, and standards
  • Prepare and execute the departmental budget
  • Negotiate and ensure contracts are in place at project start
  • Stay current with industry trends, design practices, construction methods, and technology
  • Innovate and develop new standards, policies, and procedures to improve efficiency and reduce costs
  • Continually update departmental manuals, standards, and checklists
  • Review and approve employee timesheets
  • Balance workloads and assign appropriate staff to projects
  • Complete staff workload planning and attend project scheduling meetings
  • Ensure department equipment is adequate and properly maintained
  • Empower and inspire team members

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Thorough understanding of engineering theory and design criteria
  • Strong knowledge of applied mathematics and physics
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation abilities
  • Strong time management skills with a demonstrated sense of urgency
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proven supervisory and leadership abilities
  • Ability to prioritize and delegate tasks effectively
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
  • Proficiency with CAD, REVIT, Civil 3D, and other department-specific design software
  • Ability to work efficiently in a remote environment while maintaining team connectivity

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering (required)
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) (required)
  • Eight (8) to fourteen (14) years of related experience (required)
