General Laborers in highway construction perform a wide range of physical tasks to support the construction, maintenance, and repair of roads, highways, bridges, and related infrastructure. Responsibilities include assisting skilled tradespeople, operating basic hand and power tools, and ensuring work sites remain safe and organized.
Duties typically include preparing and clearing construction sites, loading and unloading materials, setting up traffic control devices, and placing cones, barriers, and signage. Laborers assist with excavation, grading, asphalt and concrete placement, compaction, and drainage installation. They may also help with form setting, rebar placement, pavement patching, and cleanup activities.
General Laborers follow safety regulations, wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), and comply with traffic control and environmental guidelines. Work is often performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and may involve heavy lifting, repetitive motion, extended periods of standing, and working near moving traffic and heavy equipment.
