Horizontal Directional Driller

(Fiber Optic Installation)

Full-Time | $25–$35/hr DOE | Local Projects

 

A growing underground utilities contractor is seeking an experienced Horizontal Directional Driller  to join their team. The company has a substantial amount of local work already secured and is launching an additional local crew to meet demand. This is a strong opportunity for a dependable operator who wants steady, long-term work close to home.


Key Responsibilities

  • Operate Horizontal Directional Drills (Ditch Witch or similar) to install conduit for underground fiber optic lines
  • Read and interpret utility maps, bore plans, and project specifications
  • Safely set up, operate, and maintain drilling and locating equipment
  • Perform potholing, trenching, and identify utilities safely
  • Mix and monitor drilling fluids, pressures, and returns
  • Communicate with crew members to maintain safe, efficient operations
  • Complete daily paperwork, logs, and equipment inspections
  • Assist with site restoration, cleanup, and related tasks

Qualifications

  • 1–3+ years of HDD operating experience preferred
  • Background in underground utility installation, ideally fiber
  • Skilled in using Ditch Witch or comparable drilling/locating systems
  • Working knowledge of drilling fluids and bore planning
  • Ability to drive work trucks
  • Ability to work outdoors and lift 50+ lbs
  • Strong safety habits, teamwork, and reliability

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with HDD rigs
  • Fiber optic cable installation
  • Mini-excavator or construction equipment operation
  • Traffic control experience or certification

Compensation & Benefits

  • $25–$35 per hour, depending on experience
