The Manual Lathe Operator is responsible for setting up and operating manual lathes to cut, thread, and prepare pipe to customer and production specifications. This role requires strong knowledge of machining principles, precision measurement, and safe shop practices. The ideal candidate produces quality parts efficiently while maintaining tight tolerances and adhering to safety and quality standards.
Set up and operate manual lathes to cut, face, chamfer, and thread pipe per work orders and specifications
Perform pipe threading operations (NPT, straight thread, or as required) using appropriate tooling and procedures
Read and interpret work instructions, drawings, and job travelers
Measure and verify dimensions using calipers, micrometers, thread gauges, and other precision tools
Select, install, and adjust tooling, inserts, and cutting fluids to meet quality requirements
Inspect finished parts for accuracy, thread quality, and surface finish; document results as required
Perform routine machine maintenance (cleaning, lubrication, basic adjustments)
Maintain a clean and organized work area consistent with 5S and safety expectations
Follow all company safety policies, including proper PPE, lockout/tagout awareness, and safe material handling
Work collaboratively with supervisors, quality, and team members to resolve production or quality issues
1+ years of experience operating a manual lathe (pipe threading experience strongly preferred)
Ability to hold tolerances and produce consistent thread quality
Proficient with precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, thread gauges)
Ability to read and understand technical instructions and basic blueprints
Comfortable handling pipe and materials using shop equipment (hoist, cart, etc.)
Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
Reliable attendance and ability to work in a production environment
Experience threading pipe to NPT standards or similar thread forms
Knowledge of tooling setup, speeds/feeds, and cutting fluids for various materials (steel, stainless, etc.)
Familiarity with shop quality standards and inspection processes
Forklift or overhead crane experience (if applicable)
Ability to stand for extended periods and work in a shop environment
Lift up to 50 lbs (more with assistance/hoist)
Frequent bending, reaching, gripping, and handling metal materials
Ability to work around moving machinery while following all safety protocols
